Its tiny black legs are tucked up, and its beak is slightly open. The background is a soft, blurred neutral brown, which makes the bird’s colors pop dramatically. There’s a Sedge that returns to the same bush every year, I know not necessarily the same Sedge 🤷‍♂️ They single out that tree on edge of a reed bed that I pass on my daily walk. A Great Spotted Woodpecker bursts into flight, wings spread wide in a dazzling display of black-and-white feathers. Its bright red under-tail glows against the dark background, and its talons are curled mid-air, as if gleefully shaking off the working week. With its beak pointed forward and an air of confidence, launching itself straight into the weekend.
