We must act now: without a written constitution, Reform UK will have carte blanche to toxify our nation | Goerge Monbiot It means breaking with hundreds of years of tradition, but it canโ€™t wait. As hard-right figures spread division and laud autocrats, a fail-safe is vital, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

We're facing a political emergency: a high likelihood of an shamelessly authoritarian government in 2029. So we urgently need this basic safeguard: a codified constitution.
This week's column explains what we're missing and why it's so important.

Why I gave the world wide web away for free | Tim Berners-Lee My vision was based on sharing, not exploitation โ€“ and hereโ€™s why itโ€™s still worth fighting for

Tim Burners-Lee on #AI:

"We must ensure policymakers do not end up playing the same decade-long game of catchup they have done over social media. The time to decide the governance model for AI was yesterday, so we must act with urgency."

I created a petition to draw attention to this topic. It's about to end with less than 90 signatures.

I sent out a press release to journalists & political reps, and shared it widely - but all to no avail.

There's still time to sign and share it though...

"What if I told you I could stop you worrying about climate change, and all you had to do was read one book? Great, youโ€™d say, until I mentioned that the reason youโ€™d stop worrying was because the book says our species only has a few years before itโ€™s wiped out by superintelligent AI anyway."

If Anyone Builds it, Everyone Dies review โ€“ how AI could kill us all If machines become superintelligent weโ€™re toast, say Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nate Soares. Should we believe them?

I've said for some time that the AI crisis may outpace the climate emergency.

AI developments are so rapid that few understand the immense implications.

The risk of superintelligence wiping out humanity is just one of a multitude of growing risks around AI.

Could we please stop pretending that the flags being hung from streetlamps or painted on roundabouts are innocent expressions of patriotic pride? This is the far right marking out its territory. It uses these flags to intimidate its traditional victims and opponents. ๐Ÿงต1/3

Lincoln showed what good leadership looks like. We donโ€™t have to settle for this crop of ineffective leaders; we deserve better, we need better, we can have better - Lincoln is proof of that. Our desperate times call for such leaders to urgently arise.

Lincoln was one of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen. He had wisdom, empathy, compassion, strength, morality, and (to borrow Doris Kearns Goodwinโ€™s term) political genius, in spades.

Why does the US support Israel's crimes? Why does the US support Israelโ€™s genocidal crimes against the Palestinian people, even in the face of overwhelming international condemnation, at massive expense, and to the point of totally debasing ...

This, by @jasonhickel.bsky.social, is the clearest explanation I have yet read of why the US and UK governments continue to support the Israeli government, regardless of its great crimes against humanity.
