I also read On The Beach as an elementary school kid in the 60s - it opened my eyes & made me understand what was going on between our country & plenty of socialist, communist, & fascist others.

There‘s no shame in any way of finding reading material, let alone Springsteen.

That indelible scene was the reason the Principal of my high school made my 11th-grade English teacher remove it from the reading list 😒

I'm reading it again for the third time in a number of years. Books are a reminder.

Read Grapes of Wrath nearly 50 years ago - the first book that had me in tears much of the way thru, but I couldn't put it down.

A great analogy for the ruthless billionaires we are surrounded by now.

Too bad most members of the MAGA movement can't read prose such as that .... maybe a college educated liberal could explain it to them.

It didn't get through to me when we studied it in high school. But I read it a couple years ago, and it perfectly hits everything that's wrong with the profit-driven world. Maybe I changed for the better, maybe the world changed for the worse. Maybe I just opened my eyes.

It's a great book, but it's tragic that what's described here is still the same, almost a century later.
