4 IMAGES/ 1 CONCLUSION Flattening inequality can only buy humans some time to face and reduce the climate consequences of past over consumption. β¦ The 1972 MIT report Limits to Growth projected cusps this decade. β¦ Kunstler wrote "The Long Emergency" in 2005. The human binge party on OIL has allowed population to exceed 8 Billion - more than tripling in my lifetime. The choice is now to die of CO2 caused heating, and waste stream pollution, OR die from not continuing to produce the fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides enabling the crop yields and the fuel for the farm equipment, distribution trucks, processing plants and packaging to get processed food to table. This image graphically summarizes The HANDY Study, which generated a model of population dynamics. It showed that elites, and those those still benefiting from the system as running have always slowed societal changes to environmental changes. It notes that greater equality in society is a necessary (but not always sufficient) condition for societal survival. The study was published in Science Direct, and is accessible at https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0921800914000615 ABSTRACT: There are widespread concerns that current trends in resource-use are unsustainable, but possibilities of overshoot/collapse remain controversial. Collapses have occurred frequently in history, often followed by centuries of economic, intellectual, and population decline. Many different natural and social phenomena have been invoked to explain specific collapses, but a general explanation remains elusive. In this paper, we build a human population dynamics model by adding accumulated wealth and economic inequality to a predatorβprey model of humans and nature. The model structure, and simulated scenarios that offer significant implications, are explained. Four equations describe the evolution of Elites, Commoners, Nature, and Wealth. The model shows Economic Stratification or Ecological Strain can independently lead to collapse, in agreement with the historical record. The measure βCarrying Capacityβ is developed and its estimation is shown to be a practical means for early detection of a collapse. Mechanisms leading to two types of collapses are discussed. The new dynamics of this model can also reproduce the irreversible collapses found in history. Collapse can be avoided, and population can reach a steady state at maximum carrying capacity if the rate of depletion of nature is reduced to a sustainable level and if resources are distributed equitably.
Your profile shows you and I agree in our ideals, and that you strive to be positive. I looked because my response is hard to accept. Basically - humans will strive to adapt, society will collapse, we may even soon go extinct.
Our leaders determine the degree of suffering and manner of collapse.
