The history of the countryside is that it is working land: it has always been the factory of the rural economy. Its historical purpose is not to look nice, that’s just a nice byproduct. Build the damn wind farms. (Happily, they don’t even ruin the visuals, imo. I like to see land at work.)

That's right - but in practice the interest earned in your Cash ISA is treated as income and unless you earn over the threshold ($130k) so its no biggie. Whereas for S&S ISAs you have to report every trade which can be hundreds a day

One issue I haven't seen picked up is Cash ISAs are one of the very few ways US citizens can get decent returns in the UK. Squeezed between ludicrous investment reporting requirements by the IRS and onerous taxes on savings in UK. 000s of thousands of US citizens in UK (more soon...) say booo

🧡 8/ A clear delivery plan for nature isn't a nice to have, it's a fundamental part of addressing environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, climate change, and adapting to a warming planet. It can also secure us significant economic and social benefits.

In order for our economies and societies to become less destructive and more supportive of nature, we will need updated policy and regulation from government to enable businesses to contribute to the protection and restoration of the natural environment

We know the planning system is crucial to enable the delivery of the government's 2030 clean power mission. But it needs to do so in a way that brings the public along on the journey through proper engagement and enhances nature.

Businesses should internalise and improve on their interactions with nature because it bolsters their supply chains and makes it easier to adapt to a changing climate. They should also lean into their improved nature policies because it is political gold dust and CONSUMERS WANT TO SUPPORT NATURE

Resharing this article after the underwhelming COP16 conclusion

Nature is too messy to create a financialised 'market' for because, in part, you cannot quantify the cultural value of nature. However nature is politically potent in a way climate isnt because we connect with nature so personally

Where does nature fit within the modern American political psyche?

I've read some takes in the last few days that say environmental issues have broadly been silo-ed into the 'progressive' bucket of modern American politics, which is poisonous for the future of the US and untethered from US history

Lord Deben has a great climate story that links climate change to wetter winters and soggy chips - to paraphrase, if you enjoy your chips with a crispy skin and fluffy center, we need to hit net zero

It's very far from the most viral part of @duncanrobinson.bsky.social's new piece on the politics of wage compression but he kindly cites work by @jrgingrich.bsky.social and me on mismatched graduates. A quick thread on what we mean by that. 1/n

Spoke to an ex-NYC friend about this and she said its due to the awful work culture and frequently being handed urgent work to complete right before home-time. Normalises it for other occasions too I guess

Run a big message on rooting out corruption in politics? Reversing policies like Citizens United, stop politicians owning individual stocks, close the revolving door between government, big biz and regulators. Arguing against would be incriminating in itself...

β€˜We need to show what we’re trying to do is worth it’: voice of the UK energy industry steps down After five years making Energy UK β€˜noisier’ on green issues, Emma Pinchbeck has been picked to lead the UK’s fight against global heating
