Where the Light Softens

A faint pink
passes through the sky—

perhaps the trees
are starting to open.

Spring drifts
in a blurred light,
brushing
the quiet shape
of air.

What Remains After the Light

A plum tree blooming
by the eaves.

Someone once watched it.
Said nothing.
Stayed.

Now the day is gone.
The tree remains.
Let it not forget
that I was there.

Where Nothing Has Yet Knocked　

Deep in the hills—
the pinewood door
still closed
to anything begun.

Snowmelt beads
fall
on its wood,
pause,
fall again.

A quiet moment before spring begins.

Between plum branches—
where color
almost gathers—
the moon
keeps its hush
and something
not yet spring
almost stirs.

Yes—that’s a beautiful find.
What strikes me is the contrast:
the Manyōshū verse unfolds through time—
Buson’s haiku holds a space.
One turns, the other stays still.

You're definitely not alone! Buson was overlooked for a long time—even in Japan.
Shiki helped bring him back into the spotlight during the Meiji era.
Where Issa tugs at the heart and Shiki captures what’s real, Buson gives us light, distance, and atmosphere—like in this one.
