Happy World Ocean Day!

This #WOD I spend on the train travelling to Nice for the #UNOceanConference.

You can feel momentum building for ocean protection and for bringing the funding gap for conservation.

Such an exciting time to be here! I really feel the time is ripe for some #oceanoptimism

So nice to see this work on converting abandoned rice fields back into mangroves, from my colleagues in Guinea-Bissau, getting the recognition it deserves!

You can learn all about it in this short video that was launched at last week in Abu Dhabi

In Kenya, a river restoration initiative pays for itself, and then some NAIROBI β€”Β  The water supply for Nairobi’s five million people β€” and four million others besides β€” depends on the Tana river, which flows for 1,000 km from the Aberdare mountains to the Indian Ocean. T...

The Upper Tana-Nairobi Water Fund was established in 2015, drawing money from corporations and government to pay for watershed restoration and reforestation of this vital resource.

But obstacles include building up expert knowledge of nature-based solutions by officials in the water sector.

For my fisheries friends, another reason to not get so myopically focused on I(UU) fishing. There is plenty of legal (or, at least, not illegal) destructive/overexploitative fishing out there. It's been an effort to start looking at our campaign planning & communications language to check ourselves.

Oceanograaf David Ho: 'Klimaatstrijd heeft disruptieve actie nodig' Aan de vooravond van COP28 hekelt de oceanograaf dat zeker fossiele bedrijven te veel invloed hebben op politici.

I said some things…

Political inaction on climate is because there is a time scale mismatch between election cycles and tangible results of climate policies. We need politicians who think about humanity and the living world instead of the next election.

Another lesson is that you can't flirt with these parties as the right and centrist parties were doing in our elections. They were playing with fire they could not control.
Their stance basically made it look OK to vote for Wilders.
