You can and should generalize this.

The dude who creeps on women and follows them around the store or whatever is going to cost you ten women customers.

Critically, THERE ARE MORE OF ME THAN HIM. KEEPING CATPISSMAN COSTS YOU TEN OF ME. The effect of multiple catpissmen is multiplied. You have two or three playing Lorcana or Pokemon and you had better fucking believe middle class parents aren't bringing their kids there.

If you have a tournament, magic or Warhammer or whatever? I want to come to that tournament. I want to come to painting night. I want to make incidental impulse buys at those events.

I will not come if I have to be across the table from catpissman.

I don't want to bring my partner, child, or friend to your store if catpissman is there. I can get my stuff on the Internet. I probably spend as much money or more than he does, I just don't make gaming my whole identity.

If there is a guy who stinks like cat piss browsing the D&D books, you don't want to tell him to leave and come back after he takes a shower. It's confrontation, it's uncomfortable, you may be losing a sale.

Too bad.

The customers who encounter him don't want to come back now.

You have to understand that it is happening all the time and it is, in fact, your fault for not competently managing your space.

In short, every shithead you don't ban costs you ten other customers.

"A [potentially regular] customer doesn't say anything but never comes back" doesn't register with you as An Event the way that kicking someone out (temporarily or permanently) does, so it's extremely easy to miss it.

I call this the 10:1 Rule, but that is purely an estimate. The mathematical reality is of course more complicated.

Synopsis: You need to kick more people out.

You will actually have a larger base of customers/attendees if you kick more people out. You will make more money. I am dead serious.

I spent an excessive number of years moderating a gaming forum and I learned a great deal about community spaces and cultivation, whether I wanted to or not. I have critical advice for anyone who runs a game store or gaming convention. Please share this thread with people who run those things.
