Trump administration cuts to NSF will result in more than 200,000 FEWER people per year involved in basic science, training, and education - what should have been the next generation of US scientists. This isn't even eating your seed corn, it is setting your seed corn on fire and salting the earth.

Statement begins:
The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (NWS), is profoundly alarming. It appears that NOAA staff fired today include meteorologists, data and computer scientists responsible for maintaining and upgrading weather predictive models, and technicians responsible for maintaining the nation’s weather instrumentation network (among many others).

Housed within NOAA, the U.S. NWS is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. Its cost of operation is only ~$3-4/yr per taxpayerβ€”equivalent to a single cup of coffeeβ€”and yields a truly remarkable return on investment (at least 10 to 1, and perhaps 100 to 1, depending on methods of estimation). NOAA and the NWS collectively offer tens to hundreds of billions of dollars each year in net economic benefit through a combination of averted losses and efficiencies gained....

I have written a short statement responding to mass firings today of #NOAA / National Weather Service (#NWS) staff (which were concentrated among recent hires as well as highly experienced staff who had recently been promoted). Please see below screenshot & below for full text.

The U.S. #NationalWeatherService, housed within #NOAA, is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. It costs only ~$3/yr per taxpayer, & yields ~10:1 return on investment--saving economy 10s-100s of billions, not to mention thousands of lives.

Crazy how accurate you guys were.. and the official forecasts, while not as geographically precise, called out the risk super clearly too. But what could really be done (unless of course does turn out to be energized powerlines that sparked it)?

@robmayeda.bsky.social any ideas why the air quality keeps getting so bad even after we have storms?

@edwardsanthonyb.bsky.social any idea why the air quality in the bay area is so persistently bad recently? It cleared with the storm this morning but is getting worse again already. Seems unusual, even for winter

A narrow cold frontal rainband. A short but intense period of heavy rain and winds as a cold front moves through

Rainfall totals are more indicative until a few days out. Individual model runs like Michael referred to can change wildly especially more than a few days out. The ensemble model runs combine many different possibilities and so can give a bit more confidence on trends even 4-10 days away.
