So instead of only residents, wintering quails in southern Spain are a mix of three karyotypes coexisting, but with differences in morphology, migration, and diet.

But their diets differed 🪶
Stable isotope data revealed that quails without the inversion could be using different resources compared to quails with the inversion.

But we found that all three karyotypes coexist in this wintering area!

We hypothesized that the presence of resident common quails in the south of the Iberian Peninsula is the consequence of the high frequency of this chromosomal inversion.

Durint winter, when only residents were expected to remain, If our hypothesis was right, most quails should carry the inversion.

A large chromosomal inversion (>1200 genes!) in common quails (Coturnix coturnix) is linked to phenotypic traits:
🔹 Bigger body size
🔹 Darker throat pigmentation
🔹 Reduced flight efficiency
🔹 Limited migration.
