Photo of my right hand holding a book. It has a white cover with black letters:
Stan van Pelt
Sloppy Science
Alles over wetenschapsfraude: van foutjes to nepcongressen
And it features a blue abstract smear on the front
I will be bringing my copy of @stanvanpelt.bsky.social's new book Sloppy Science (in Dutch) to read in the train.
I hope he can sign it for me!

I've just updated my preprint on short personal reviews of novels on hashtag#ResearchIntegrity bit.ly/409E5ff
Please attend me to novels which you believe to belong to this list, but are not yet included.
The preprint recently also has been published in a Chinese journal: bit.ly/3K6P17B

Exclusive: Journal bans drug safety database papers as they flood the literature
celafon/iStockPhoto Starting around 2023, a curious trend took hold in papers on drug safety monitoring. The number of articles published on an individual drug and its link to specific adverse evenβ¦
This is another wake-up call about what is happening with scientific literature, which is being flooded by template papers produced by paper mills. One example is the use of open-access databases like FAERS or NHANES, combined with analyses that rely on biased or incorrect methodologies.

I believe novels can reveal different aspects of academic life, not unike qualitative research, but with more freedom of expression, which can help to make the didactical points you find important to get across..

Impossible to say. Iβve read them over a period spanning more than a decade. The novels that impressed me most, show how complex the minefield is early career researchers have to navigate. Like e.g. A. Goodman - Intuition and J. Rohn - The honest look (not yet in the preprint).

Europeβs largest paper mill? 1,500 research articles linked to Ukrainian network
Nature - A group of companies has flooded 380 journals with hundreds of suspect papers since 2017.
An investigation has identified more than 1,500 research articles produced by a network of Ukrainian companies that could be one of Europeβs largest paper mills

My favorite part of this story on excellent work by @abalkina.bsky.social and Svetlana Kleiner is when @miryamnaddaf.bsky.social asks the paper mill if they are a paper mill and they respond "it's a secret ππ"

DISCO II and III Methods
Methods for DISCO II and III (no idea what that means)
Comparing 2012 and 2016.
Industry-sponsored RCTs had 98% registered - doing really well. Non-industry sponsored did good, 90%.
Completion status: Here we found lots of dicontinuation, usually because of poor recruitment.

A non-identified speaker with his title slide. Slide has lots of names, so I assume the person is one of them.
Next: 'Nonregistration, Discontinuation, and Nonpublication of Randomized Trials in Switzerland, the UK, Germany, and Canada: An Updated Meta-Research Study'
What proportion of RCTs are registered, discontinued, published?
[EB: not sure who the speaker is - another non-informative slide!]

A prompt-based approach was highly accurate in defining clinical trial outcomes and identifying outcome changes in ClinicalTrials.gov. This approach could be expanded to identify changes between registrations and manuscripts. Although it did not achieve perfect accuracy, our prompt-based approach could help editors and peer reviewers
detect likely discrepancies that warrant further review.
#ChatGPT was accurate in identifying changes in RCT outcomes on ClinicalTrials.gov, and completed the entire process (ie, matching, defining, comparing) in ~2 min per trial vs 27 min for humans
