One of Britain’s most senior police officers has launched an angry tirade against Extinction Rebellion protesters going “all floppy” when they get arrested. Sir Stephen House, the deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan police, said the tactic of going limp was a “flipping nuisance” as it required extra officers to drag protesters away. House told a London assembly police and crime committee hearing: “We have asked them to stop being floppy. And that might seem like a silly thing to say, but when we arrest them and pick them up, they go all floppy, which is why you see four or five officers carrying them away. It’s a complete waste of officers’ time, and a complete pain in the neck.” Extinction Rebellion: how successful were the latest protests? He said: “The problem with them going floppy and four offices carrying them away [is that it] looks to the general public like police are overreacting here. We’re not making them go floppy. This gets progressively funnier with every use of the term "floppy".

I already saw that the term creates tensions but is also ground for discussion. It helps to start thinking about what should grow or not, accumulation and distribution of wealth, or human nature. Before finding a new term, I think we need to find ways to communicate while we preserve our identities.

Path dependency always plays a role for sure. It has also been a very diverse academic/activist movement so it is difficult to decide about changing a term covering this diversity. Politically, the wellbeing economy is trying differently. I can humbly recommend this recent piece on the topic!

But at least, it makes people read and think about it, so that is something!

What bothers me is that those critiques offer their own interpretation of degrowth without addressing those nuances and debates. This is really the always the same cliché that 'we want to make everyone poor' and it is sad to see potential allies thinking that way.

There is a wide variety in the movement, however, I would say that overall we are well aware of what it would cost and we recognize the transition part is largely understudied. This is something more and more degrowthers are trying to work on nowadays.
