Ive been thinking about this post since I saw it yesterday. And about the (male) profs who told me I’d get funding cause I’m a woman, those who started relationships with their students, the one I was warned about because he asks women PhD students to sit on his knee & explain their research

Casual staff | Human Resources - UNSW Sydney

Because UoA has no guidelines on payment rates for guest lectures, I was looking for reasonable information online and found this UNSW page showing casual academic pay rates.

I'm sure this is news to nobody but casual staff are MASSIVELY underpaid in NZ.

'Pretty icky': NZ professor named in Epstein files says disgraced financier offered $75k for book on Lolita Brian Boyd says he did not know about Jeffrey Epstein's crimes when they first met.

I shouldn’t be surprised, but Listener 7 fellow traveler, Bryan Boyd, appears in the Epstein files: www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/wellingto...

Thinking of all the academic (and other) women in Aotearoa feeling triggered by the news about a certain UoA prof tonight. Whether you have a personal connection to this one or have similar experiences, I hope you have good support. Reach out if you want to talk.

8 years ago, I submitted my PhD thesis. Since then, I've:
• Had 7 fixed-term teaching contracts
• Lectured >5,000 students
• Given >40 talks at conferences/workshops

And published:
• 13 research articles
• 3 book reviews
• 7 general audience pieces

I'm tired guys. And still precarious.#AcademicSky

Epstein’s economic power among academics was made possible by a capitalist system that makes higher education dependent on the charity economy rather than a public good supported by taxing the rich

Early Career Voices from a Changing Research System | New Zealand Science Review

It's telling that many of these ECRs felt that having their name on their piece would prejudice their future in the system. This collection may be eye-opening for some of you, and for others you'll just nod along in recognition. Either way, it's here for now, and for the future.

Please take a look!

Early Career Voices from a Changing Research System | New Zealand Science Review

As the Aotearoa/NZ research system shifts around us, it's important to hear from the voices within, especially those who are the future of the system!

It has been an absolute privilege for the New Zealand Science Review to work with early career researchers (ECRs) to get their experiences on record

Biographical Information RFNZ Board members | Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment Biographies for the Research Funding New Zealand Board.

MBIE has announced the board members of Research Funding New Zealand, the new org that will make funding decisions for NZ's "major public investments in science, innovation and technology"

My initial response: 😬🤔🙄WTF

Why are three of them Aus-based? Why such a strong Agri lean? ⚛️🧪👩‍🔬

Misogynist slurs, dis/misinfo whipping up online harassment, threats of violence, death = online gender-based violence. Note also the appearance-based abuse (women are far more likely to be subject to this). When we will we stop expecting women public figures to protect themselves from this?

Our researchers who are studying the research system in Aotearoa appreciated the chance to ask him some challenging questions 🔥

One of the things that was special about the Marsden Fund is that the decision-making process was tweaked over the years rather than reinvented over and over again like other funds. That allowed for decades of learning that I hope will not be lost in this latest restructure.

The research system in Aotearoa New Zealand is rife with obstacles for entry and retention of diversity. A new paper from a Te Pūnaha Matatini team argues that this system is characterised by a lack of imagination around leadership that generates change → onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
