A 1947 French Film Accurately Predicted Our 21st-Century Addiction to Smartphones When we watch a movie from, say, twenty years ago, it strikes us that both nothing and everything has changed. Apart from their slightly baggier clothes, the people look the same as us. But where are ...

A brain drain would impoverish the United States and diminish world science Europe is advertising itself as a destination for embattled US scientists. It seems many are considering leaving.

This is true for every country in the world suffering brain drain. We can see the effects being strong in Greece after 10+ years of economic crisis. #AcademicSky

IBM was originally expressed by Arima and Iachello. Rick Casten had a catalytic impact on making IBM a real model for the nucleus. But many many others have contributed over the years.

I keep in my heart the very last Skype call with my all-time fav person who decided to give me a call just before the deletion. A moment, indeed!

So, today was another end-of-an-era moment for me. I have shutdown my Skype presence, erased my account and dropped my petty balance. A journey that started 22 years ago for me gets to an end. The bittersweet feeling is about all the memories Skype helped creating for me that are not digital zeros.

The passage from a BBC interview with Hoyle reads:

We now come to the question of applying the observational tests to earlier theories. These theories were based on the hypothesis that all the matter in the universe was created in one
big bang at a particular time in the remote past. It now turns out that in some respect or other all such theories are in conflict with the observational requirements. And to a degree
that can hardly be ignored. Investigators of this problem are like a party of mountaineers attempting an unclimbed peak.

Happy birthday to the name "Big Bang.” Fred Hoyle, defending his steady state theory on the BBC, accidentally coined the term for the prevailing model of the early Universe #OTD in 1949. He was criticizing "the hypothesis that all matter of the universe was created in one big bang." 🧪 🔭 ⚛️ 💥

The atomic spectral lines in this app come from the NIST atomic spectroscopy group, which has provided the world with spectroscopic measurements for 120 years.

Today we got word that the federal government is laying off the entire group. 🔭🧪

Very happy my PhD student’s work has been published OA today. In the paper, we summarize the effort to simulate and characterize a novel γ-ray spectrometer designed and constructed to operate in the depths of the ocean. If you think it’s easy, I can assure you it’s not.

The plunger is really special as it can alter the distance between the excitation and the stopper foila so it can control the amount of nuclei decaying in flight, thus offering variable ranges half lives to be measured.

Since they have a velocity, the emitted gamma rays are affected by the Doppler effect and their energies are shifted. Nuclei which reach they stopper foil, stop and then decay show no Doppler. The technique measures Doppler differences present in the gamma ray spectra and deduces the half lives

I guess I had it coming.
I can not get into technical details, but a short answer is this: you create nuclei to excited states by shooting ions onto a target. The nuclei exit the foil and let fly through vacuum until they stop in a stopper foil (seen in the picture). (1/n)
