‘Undercurrents’ contains three of the longest essays I’ve ever written: on how I wrote my novel ‘The Mirror’; on one of my favourite bands, super-dupa German electronic funk duo Mouse on Mars; and on the story of losing two close friends in mountaineering accidents 32 years apart.

‘The Hinge of a Metaphor’ was amazing. ‘The Carbon Arc’, is another incredibly powerful collection of personal perspectives on unique lived experience of cinema and is a wonder to behold. It’s out very soon.

Against all odds, I’ve managed to get these three books of essays published in the last 10 years. Each one contains 28 essays, reviews & interviews. So proud of these guys. If you’d like one or more of these ‘cornucopias of delight’™, do get in touch.

If you enjoyed this, do consider buying the anthology. The full version of my piece is twice as long as the one The Observer has printed: but more importantly, the other contributions sound great.

Richard Skinner gave me free rein to write about cinema for his forthcoming anthology The Carbon Arc. Having already revisited two of the films that made an indelible impression on me when I was young (What a Carve Up and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes) this was a chance to discuss the third.

One of the contributors for ‘The Carbon Arc’ is celebrated author Jonathan Coe. An edited version of his essay, about following in the footsteps of George Lazenby, has been published in The Observer. ‘The Carbon Arc’ will be out in a few weeks.

Pleased to have my essay on ‘Chinatown’ (which appears in my essay collection ‘Vade Mecum’) cited in a paper by Australian academic Jack Fischler. Fame!

A project that is very dear to me... My contribution on Eternity and a Day—a weaving of Proust, Patočka, Nancy, Bachelard, Cixous, and of course, Angelopoulos—was itself written on the threshold between one realm and another.

My gratitude to @richardnskinner.bsky.social

On 20 Feb 2004, I was there at the RFH to hear Brian Wilson perform ‘Smile’ in its entirety for the first time. Gone is the tortured teenage angst of ‘Pet Sounds’; now Brian Wilson was writing about the whole history of America. Epic in scope and style, it’s one of the great American symphonies.

Friends Way, Day 1: Barley – Sawley (8 miles)

There’s no getting away from the fact that the way up Pendle Hill is steep! Outstanding 360° views from the top, however. A good start to what is going to be a challenging, cosmic walk but, MY, it was hot! 🥵
