귀족적 취미로 글을 썼던 많은 남성 작가들과는 달리, 일부 여성 작가들은 생계를 위해 글을 써야 했습니다. 특히 스펜더가 연구한 17~18세기의 여성 작가들은 대부분 자신과 가족을 부양하기 위해 글을 썼지요. 직업 선택권이 극히 제한된 사회에서 생계형 여성 작가들은 집필에 필사적일 수밖에 없었습니다. 만약 작가로 일할 수 없게 되면 다른 일을 찾아야 했는데, 여성에게는 직업을 얻을 수 있는 기회가 거의 전부 닫혀 있었기 때문입니다.
