Geophysicist at UT Austin working on the connections between planetary interior and surface systems. The physics of plate tectonics, from earthquakes to global mantle convection. Makes maps.
Thanks for hanging in there.

Four hours after the arrival of the first #tsunami wave at Crescent City CA, as shown by this tide gauge record, more than thirteen hours after the M8.8 Kamchatka #earthquake, the wave height again reached almost 1 meter, not that much lower than the maximum of 1.1 m almost three hours earlier. π§ͺβοΈ

Since the TΕhoku quake and tsunami struck in 2011, Japan has built three offshore monitoring networks comprising more than 200 instrument stations, connected to the mainland by optical fiber. The networks provide real-time warnings and insights into subduction zones, where one tectonic plate dives under another at a seafloor trench.
In the next few months, Japan will finish work on an instrumented network of seafloor cables and wire it directly into a national early warning system.
