This is Alice's friend Sandy Ho, posting. Per Alice's wishes, this message is being shared at the time of her passing. Hi everyone, it looks like I ran out of time. I have so many dreams that I wanted to fulfill and plans to create new stories for you. There are a few in progress that might come to fruition in a few years if things work out. I did not ever imagine I would live to this age and end up a writer, editor, activist, and more. As a kid riddled with insecurity and internalized ableism, I could not see a path forward. It was thanks to friendships and some great teachers who believed in me that I was able to fight my way out of miserable situations into a place where I finally felt comfortable in my skin. We need more stories about us and our culture. You all, we all, deserve the everything and more in such a hostile, ableist environment. Our wisdom is incisive and unflinching. I'm honored to be your ancestor and believe disabled oracles like us will light the way to the future. Don't let the bastards grind you down. I love you all.

I've seen the debate in the community and I want to feel okay about the "they won't cut people who need it", but...based on what? Who decides your disability is "bad enough" to qualify?

It's even worse for people applying for the first time. these agencies have their ways to discourage you.

People who likely have little experience with disabilities deciding, based on 1 interview with you (where I live) whether you "need it", yeah, it was hard enough for people as it is, it'll get worse for those with new and/or not obvious disabilities.

“They’re cutting Medicaid so they can get rid of the people taking advantage of it.”

Actually, the amount of people taking advantage of Medicaid are probably less than 1%. Why? Because in order to qualify, you basically have to live under the poverty line. You can barely survive. It’s not a luxury.

We should have a memorial day for COVID. It is horrific that we as a society have done virtually nothing to remember the millions who have died. Rushing to forget what happened also makes it much more likely that we will continue to repeat our deadly mistakes.
