ICYMI: Our socialist-in-office was featured in @cityandstateny.bsky.social last week! Our chapter has never let its small size come in the way of big goals. In a major precedent setting move, a Canadian federal judge blocked the deportation of a nonbinary US citizen because the Canadian immigration office failed to adequately assess the conditions for LGBTQ people since Trump took office.

Here's a big-picture geopolitical thread on Israel's war on Iran - its possibilities, impossibilities, dynamics, and delusions. My goal is to give you a full big-picture view in one place, which is why this is a long thread. If you prefer drip-fed updates, skip this thread.

This new tool lets artists 'poison' their artwork to deter AI companies from using it to train their modelsβ€”here’s how it works If an artist doesn't want their pieces being used to train AI image generators, a new tool called Nightshade would let them "poison" their artwork.

Commentary: ICE arrested a California union leader. Does Trump understand what that means? Unions in California are different from many in the U.S. because they are predominately people of color and immigrants. The arrest of a union president in L.A. will likely activate these unions to bec...

Pause for a minute to appreciate the valiant Program Officers still at NSF, who are doing their utmost to preserve what they can. They’re in the stinking rotting belly of the beast, laboring on our behalf.

As a new wave of student actions ensues, remember that the role of faculty allies is NOT to curb students' radical impulses. If you can't participate because of your own position, that's fine. But students are the radical flank of the movement, and you should absolutely never try to reign them in.

πŸ§ͺ I just saw a specific NSF grant termination letter and it is FUCKING WILD.

The letter said "not subject to appeal", which is a **blatant** violation of NSF's own policies and broader cross-agency regulations (regulation below): www.ecfr.gov/current/titl...

NSF just opened itself up to lawsuit.

This is an obvious point, but cannot overstated. There is an enormous difference between deporting someone - where they get off a plane as a free citizen in their home country AND FUNNELING THEM INTO A BRUTAL PRISON FROM WHICH THEY HAVE NO CHANCE OF EVER EMERGING!!!

I'm a cybersecurity professor and I agree with this.

If your threat model includes the cops confiscating your phone to acquire your sensitive data... Look up "full disk encryption Android/iOS", set it, and lock it with a long PIN/password (no biometrics). And be prepared to lose your phone.

I can't stress enough that you should take every opportunity possible to gather with others (virtually and in person). You will feel more grounded.
