π§ͺ Senate appropriators say: NIH's budget gets a... boost!
Rather than 40% cut, NIH gets a $400M *increase* in the Senate committee bill for FY26 (about +1%).
"Congress has your back," said @murray.senate.gov.
ADVOCACY MATTERS! There's still a long road (esp in the House), so keep up pressure.

ALT: spongebob from spongebob squarepants is standing in front of a rock and says phew .
So, it seems that the conclusions are:
(1) The communications around this policy have been atrociously bad;
(2) NIH leadership includes some people with strong opinions about animal-based research who aspire to reduce or eliminate the use of animals, but realize that this would be foolish now.

This rescission package passed the Senate. It must pass the House. The deadline is tomorrow.
We hear the House has scheduled its vote for tomorrow. Johnson has little room for error!
Call your Reps and ask them to delay, and to vote no. If this passes it will make #NIH budget cuts more likely.

Is it just me or do others find it super hypocritical that health agency officials (HHS/FDA/NIH) have suddenly become anti-animal research activists for "ethical reasons" while being quiet about, if not actively promoting, more consumption of red meat, tallow and other forms of animal fat and flesh?

Good news - it appears that the requirement for non-animal models is at the NOFO level. This just means NIH can't solicit for only animal research grants - other approaches must be considered. This is actually a totally reasonable policy!

This will devastate all of my colleagues that do neuroscience in mice. Drugs don't always translate from mouse to human, But 90% of our genes are shared. They allow recordings and manipulations that cannot be done in humans. We will cede discovery to Europe and China with this unnecessary handicap.

How a discovery in Yellowstone National Park led to the development of PCR - Richmond Scientific
A discovery in Yellowstone National Park led to the development of PCR, the gold-standard COVID-19 tests used to fight the global pandemic.
Reminder: Nobel-prize winning PCR (1983), used in basically all genetic tech today, was only possible because of extremophile bacterium discovered in 1964 in Yellowstone funded by a small ~$80k NSF grant with no obvious application at the time. #science π§ͺ
