This passage shocked me to my core.
The loss of biodiversity isn't a tragic accident or oversight, it was the plan!
It shouldn't be a zero sum game, there's plenty of money in society to do both, but yes understanding biodiversity does seem to be a bit of a displacment activity instead of conserving it. That might have been understandable a generation ago but we're deep in an emergency now!

Acting on climate isn't some noble altruistic quest - it's self defence

"The price of some foods hit by extreme weather are rising more than four times faster than others in the average shop...the price of butter, beef, milk, coffee and chocolate had risen by an average of 15.6% over the year"
Climate change is not a problem for our grandchildren, it's today's crisis
Not cheeky at all, much appreciated by all of us!

"As an activist, I realised, I must do more than just ring the fire alarm: I must also detail the way out of the building, and show people how to find it."
'βCorporations regularly buy academics to do their bidding, recasting industry talking points to create the beginnings of an alternative scientific canon.β'
Key part of the corporate playbook along with manufacturing uncertainty; political lobbying; legal intimidation; funding bogus think tanks etc
What a great idea!
03.12.2025 17:49 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0All very good points too!
I could argue some of them, but I tend to avoid these discussions as ultimately it doesn't matter about the probabilities - we have no choice but to try, regardless
But those legal changes are one of the ways that the beneficiaries of the status quo are preventing us from addressing stuff, no?
Still the same folk, but their battle is on multiple fronts and so our defence must be too I think
The point is, you wonβt know without listening
03.12.2025 17:19 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0But it might also be that theyβre paralysed by the enormity of the challenge, or worried that their own footprint disqualifies them from speaking up
Or maybe they just donβt realise that thereβs anything they can do, or think itβll make any difference
Perhaps they dislike their idea of what the solutions may entail, whether that be greater government intervention, wind farms, or changes to their lifestyle
03.12.2025 17:19 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0They may think it will only affect other people, and make no difference to the things they really care about
They might believe itβs only for people they donβt identify with, like environmentalists or, gasp, lefties
Perhaps they see the breakdown of climate and nature as a future problem and donβt realise the urgency
Maybe they think the government has it under control, that technology will fix it, or that some great hero will save us like in the movies
It would be naΓ―ve to think thatβll suddenly change if you hit them with your best statistics
So rather than jumping in with the scariest science, youβll be better off trying to understand the mental barriers theyβve put up so you can address them directly
If your friends, neighbours and colleagues arenβt already doing much about climate change, thereβs a reason for that
Like the rest of us theyβve certainly known about our crisis for a long time, yet theyβve chosen not to do much about it themselves
Whatβs the most valuable skill for talking persuasively about climate change and helping stimulate people into action?
Itβs not the ability to debate or remember statistics. In fact it's got nothing to do with science at all
I think itβs listening

'The Fingleton review states that overturning the Finch ruling βwould establish that if a later indirect effect of a development will be assessed under a separate EIA... it does not need to be assessed as an indirect effect of the original development"'
The Finch ruling - which came about through Sarah's tireless campaigning - means that the environmental impact assessment of a fossil fuel project must include the emissions from all the fuel it produces, and not just the impact of the infrastructure itself
It's hugely important
Hi Bluesky π Iβm Oli, socialist vampire. I invented the climate crisis as a means to push through evil policies that will create a greener fairer world with more free-range organic humans (which as we all know, have the most delicious blood)
