Our interns were tasked with bringing in an object they wanted to explore the texture of. They learned how to appropriately position an artefact for the most accurate results, adjust the necessary photography settings & light sequencing, & process their photographs to create a final RTI model
21.10.2025 12:58 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
The image can be enhanced to exaggerate the surface relief and provide a better view of key details. The normals visualisation technique creates a false colour view of the normals of reflection, indicating the direction each surface faces, and giving a better idea of the overall shape of the object.
21.10.2025 12:58 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Creating an RTI involves photographing a subject while varying lighting angles in a controlled manner. Spheres are included in the photographs to record the angle & enable the processing software to calculate a matrix of surface normals that indicate the direction of reflected light from the surface
21.10.2025 12:58 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Often referred to as 2 1/2- dimensional imaging, RTI can offer a superior view of surface relief and texture compared to conventional photography. It can produce views of marks, inscriptions, and indentations to assist with readability, and create a visually engaging experience of the object
21.10.2025 12:58 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Last week, the DH Interns were introduced to Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI). RTI is a method of creating an interactive digital image of an object with a moveable light source

Illustration showing a view of the North front of St Luke's as seen from Heavitree Road. The towers of the Cathedral can be seen in the distance. In front of St Luke's a person rides by on a horse, and two women stroll with parasols.
Yesterday marked 47 years since St Luke's (teacher training) College merged with the University of Exeter.
This University Archive throwback shows St Luke's (then the Diocesan Training School) in 1855.

Painting of a tree with a grey trunk and leaves of green, red, purple and orange. Next to the tree is a poem: 'Pheasants feathers of amethyst, Magenta, crimson, burnt sienna & brown, Leaf the maple's branches with a mauve mantle, As it stands sentinel to the undying Fall.' Ronald Duncan's signature and the date '9 Sept - 77' are noted in the bottom right hand corner.
Autumn officially begins today with the Autumn Equinox! ๐
Following a very warm summer, spectacular autumn colours are expected this year - we can't wait!
This poem was written and illustrated by the writer, poet and librettist, Ronald Duncan.
