The New Yorker now joins Kirkus Reviews and the WSJ in heaping praise on NAPLES 1925 (so far!); sorry you didn't share their view.

Here's how I rendered that aphorism (#20) in THE APHORISMS OF FRANZ KAFKA: Leopards break into the temple and drink the sacrificial vessels dry; this is repeated over and over; eventually it can be calculated in advance and becomes part of the ceremony.

For a history of eunuchs and castrati, I had to go to the rare book room at Firestone Library (Princeton Univ) again & again to request books on the surgical procedures these conditions entailed. I leafed through those horrifying vols w/ the requisite white gloves, the staff giving me the side-eye.

Don't feel too bad for her. Although she breaks out into tears on every episode, her role in this whole thing is pretty shady.

Congratulations to you as well, for writing this amazing book. We jurors savored every word of your urgent and timely message.
