Stuff I saw today in Brataslava. Statue of a witch who changed her brothers into ravens. Bridge that looks like attack ship from War of the Worlds. Statue of a guy crawling out of the sewer. The Baudelaire Flowers of evil cafe.

The monkeys were named after the monks, because of the tonsure, evidently. (But I thought they were just highly caffeinated, at first. )

Touring the crypt of the Hapsburgs and our friend has on squeaky shoes, which is only a little less embarrassing than me giggling about it.

Cafe Central, where Wally and Judith realize they are being followed in Anima Rising. I wrote about it, but today a bunch of us got to go there. So exciting.

Agree, but with one corollary: Attendance is mandatory but no squaring off against other liberals until next year. We need to stand united, and win or lose, you have to show you share a common goal to stop this administration’s march into authoritarianism.

Swearing-in ceremonies are not halted by a shutdown, because they are constitutional or statutory duties, not discretionary spending activities.

A government shutdown affects agencies and programs that rely on annual appropriations, but Congress itself and the offices of elected officials (federal, state, or local) usually remain operational for essential and constitutional functions.

For example:

Members of Congress can still take the oath of office even if parts of the federal government are closed. Congressional operations are funded separately under permanent appropriations.

Presidents are sworn in on January 20th regardless of any shutdown. The inauguration is a constitutional event that cannot be postponed by funding gaps.

State and local officials are likewise sworn in per their state constitutions or laws β€” those events are governed by state authority, not federal funding.

DON'T buy into #MikeJohnson's pathetic excuse for not swearing in duly-elected #AdelitaGrijalva.

Elected official CAN be sworn in during a government shutdown.

Want some precedent?

The full House was sworn in during a government shutdown when a new Congress started in January 2019.

Emergency physician here.
Can confirm. Not just treat in the emergency department, but admit, operate, etc if necessary to stabilize. So hospitals and physicians would absorb a lot if the care were not compensated.

The Christopher Moore cruise is off with alacrity, from Vilshofen, Germany, where we saw, on one street, Waffles, a hairless window kitty, an example of the HOA does to you if you display a gnome, and what I think, was a display of Halloween Snatch Candy.
