We are heartbroken by the death of Mariam Abu Dagga, a freelance photographer who frequently worked with Doctors Without Borders in #Gaza.

Mariam was one of at least 20 people killed during Israel’s horrendous attacks on the Nasser medical complex on August 25, 2025.

Rapid, low-cost colorimetric detection of Salmonella Typhi bacteriophages for environmental surveillance | mBio Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella Typhi, remains a significant global health threat, particularly in low-resource settings with inadequate sanitation. Effective control measures, such as vaccines, r...

We developed a very low-cost, low-complexity approach that leverages colorimetric detection of Salmonella Typhi bacteriophages to monitor its distribution in wastewater, with demonstration data from Nepal, Brazil, Ivory Coast, and Niger. Results now published here:

Wastewater-based epidemiology & surveillance have made enormous strides in recent years, demonstrating utility in characterizing pathogen distributions in populations. However, current methods are too costly to be scalable in LMICs where the need for improved disease surveillance is greatest. (1/2)

Rochelle Walensky's powerful new TED Talk isn't about politics or policy. It's about people and the compassion that drives her.

"In our darkest moments, how we serve one another, how we treat one another, is ultimately what defines us."

Projecting the impact and costs of near point-of-care tuberculosis screening assays in community-based active case finding Community-based active case finding (ACF) may reduce tuberculosis incidence and mortality but is not widely implemented due to resource constraints. How novel screening test characteristics would affect the impact and costs of ACF strategies is not clear.

β€œEven God Cannot Hear Us Here”: What I Witnessed Inside an ICE Women’s Prison Tufts University doctoral student RΓΌmeysa Γ–ztΓΌrk opens up about her 45 days in a South Louisiana processing facilityβ€”and the generous and compassionate women she met.

"This narrative of human suffering, set in 2025, is filled with tears and resilience. It is a story of women. It is our story. It could very well be your story too." An essay on the inhuman conditions that ICE is confining people in, and the most beautiful sides of humanity of them coming together.

Long as I live I will not be able to comprehend the cruelty of those who cheer on the act of tearing fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, children from their communities and putting them in cages, all for having been born on a different portion of the rock we are hurtling through space upon.

I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.

This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined.

It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.

Opinion: One-size-fits-all placebo rule would slow Bay Area vaccine updates A pending Department of Health and Human Services regulation risks harming public health and stalling innovation.

My op-ed in the Mercury News:

A proposed HHS rule would delay vaccine updates and stall innovation by forcing unnecessary placebo trials.

It’s bad science β€” and worse public health.

The myth that vaccines weren’t tested with controls isn’t just wrong - it’s measurably wrong.

Now the data are all in one place.
