Does the Bukele Model Have a Future?
El Salvador’s police state will soon face a reckoning.
We write about the autocratic police regime Bukele has created in El Salvador, and the prison conditions -nnot in the performative cruelty of CECOT, but the OTHER prisons, the ones nobody visits and where the human horror of the regime is unspeakable

Democracia extinguida y juventud encarcelada con Bukele
El Salvador es un país pequeño, pero su experiencia encierra una advertencia global: no hay seguridad que justifique la anulación del Estado de derecho
We wrote about prison conditions and the total breakdown of the rule of law in in El Salvador
Bukele is sacrificing thousands of innocents incarcerating one in ten young men in inhuman prison conditions, similar to Auschwitz’s, while the world applauds a cruel dictator

And MORENA did not quite get the outcome of the election they expected. The most voted candidate teo the Supreme Court was Nuu Savi (Mixtec) attorney Hugo Aguilar Ortiz who will be the next president of the high Court
whether Aguilar will defend indigenous rights vs. megaprojects?
Still to be seen

But many voters did spoil their ballots as a form of protest as in the era of PRI hegemony.
Discontent did not mean citizens shirked from the civic duty
Mexican elections are run by citizens who volunteer in the polling booths, which were all installed
INE oversaw with professionalism.

Turnout was very low, but that does not automatically mean democratic practices were eroded
Citizens did not quite understand what they were voting for
There is no obvious counterfactual for what the "normal" turnout would be.
The complexity of the ballot would perplex any rational voter

The election of judges at all levels including the Supreme Court is not enhancing democracy
The misunderstanding comes from believing democracy = voting. The most important aspect of democratic accountability of power to citizens comes from the institutions that create checks and balances on power

My take on the Mexican Judicial election and some preliminary analysis. The best way to characterize Mexico's democratic backsliding is a chiaroscuro: citizens are still the heroic defenders of democracy, while the democratic temptations lurk in the background

Due to the disdain AMLO had towards academia, many policy makers in Mexico have not updated their thinking have not read recent academic work
We need an update on the modern thinking about economic development
New ideas will not emerge from reading Marx or von Mises

I argue that a strategy based on free trade and open markets might no longer be a sustainable way to redress the challenges of social inclusion, poverty, and preserving democracy
We must look beyond old and tired ideas, instead incorporating what we have learned on development in last 3 decades
