Any roadworks cause disruption, and it's a fair challenge that the council isn't always good at communicating when work is going to happen. But as a way to make it safer and easier to get around places without a car, it's totally necessary. More journeys on foot or bike mean fewer cars on the roads.
29.09.2025 13:22 β π 12 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0The work on Compstall Road is happening to safely link the quieter roads either side of the busy main road. Confident road cyclists such as those interviewed in the article might not see the use - but it's not intended for them.
29.09.2025 13:22 β π 15 π 2 π¬ 1 π 1As well as providing a route between Romiley and Stockport, it will link homes to nearby schools. The school run is a major source of congestion, so by providing safe non-car routes we're addressing that while making kids healthier and better prepared for lessons.
29.09.2025 13:22 β π 10 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0The Romiley to Stockport scheme is a long time coming - the original consultation was back in July 2021, so it's no surprise that not everyone is aware of it.

We've built lots of new sustainable travel routes in the past 5 years, so our Corporate Leadership Team (CLT) got on their bikes for a guided tour.
A highlight was riding the new βBridgescapeβ path, from Station Rd through Interchange Park and down the Spiral Ramp onto the TPT.
Afterwards, you can join the latest Climate Cuts β an action-inspiring community film event designed to bring people together with a simple yet powerful format:

Text stating 'Walk Ride GM statement on canal assault' and the Walk Ride GM logo.
Walk Ride GM was horrified by the recent news of a hate crime against Klaudia Mitura on the Ashton Canal.
There is no excuse for violence, including this example of male violence against women.
Incidents like this are made more likely by a widespread press and media bias against cyclists.

Fed up with pavement parking?
We're supporting @livingstreets.bsky.social to show where pavements are used as car parks to the detriment of all who walk/wheel.

Your local authority has until 21st October 2025 to apply for an e-scooter trial. We believe e-scooters are a crucial part of the shift away from cars, so PLEASE email your councillor and ask them to apply.

Before: narrow blind bridge under a 200 year old canal is one way only for vehicles with footways barely existing. A car takes up the full width. Cycles have no way into the town from this direction (and almost no other βgoodβ routes).
After: same bridge is filtered to motor vehicles with bollards on each side and a dedicated two-way cycle track as a gateway into the town, linking into other improvements as part of an Active Travel Fund project. A footway is provided to the side with tactile crossing.
I keep meaning to go and check it out, but Street View has beaten me to it for the new filter under the Peak Forest Canal on Green Lane, Romiley.
Surprised this big local win hasnβt been celebrated more. One of those βwouldnβt it be nice ifβ that they actually did! Well done Stockport Council.

09.04.2025 14:44 β π 7 π 6 π¬ 0 π 14 large yellow road signs with black lettering saying "Cyclist Dismount" placed in cycle lane on Chestergate along with some red and white cones. These are completely blocking the cycle lane, but there doesn't appear to be any works actually happening in the cycle lane.
These ones? As this is the Trans Pennine Trail, NCN 62, I have sent in a complaint to @stockportcouncil.bsky.social. The works aren't listed on the official GM roadworks website, so it isn't clear who is responsible for them. @sustrans.bsky.social @walkridestocky.bsky.social
19.04.2025 17:07 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0A flyer clipping with the following text: 20mph Speed Limit on Mauldeth Road After extensive community advocacy, a 20mph speed limit has been implemented on Mauldeth Road. This initiative aims to enhance road safety, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists. New speed limit signs have been installed. This is a positive development, promoting reduced speed limits in residential areas to improve infrastructure and safety for residents, and to encourage active travel.
π We're delighted to see that Heatons North councillors
have announced a 20mph speed limit on Mauldeth Road.
π Well done to everyone who advocated for this sensible speed change.
