Germany's largest UBI study funded by 200K private donors found that

- Everyone kept working, no change in hours
- More enrolled in university
- More job changes (for better jobs)
- More satisfied with work

This is the data UBI critics love to ignore.

Researchers tried to fix a racist lung test. It got complicated. A new lung function test ditches the medical racism of the old version, but with serious consequences to how results are applied.

"Based on research that made outdated assumptions about race, the tools 'all directed medical resources towards White people, away from Black people,' Jones says."

Screencap of text that reads
"And what will the law require citizens who want to vote do? Lacking a passport or other proof of citizenship with their married names, they must produce both a birth certificate (with the seal of the state where it was issued; no copies allowed) and a current form of identificationβ€”both with the exact same name on them. That could instantly disqualify about 90 percent of all married women without passports or other proof that matches their birth certificates or proof of a legal name change."

Oh. Is this why the GOP wants to pass the SAVE act so bad? To be able to prevent women from voting? Especially women in blue states?

A bottle of water per email: the hidden environmental costs of using AI chatbots AI needs a lot of electricity and water to stay cool in data centers. We break down the toll prompt-by-prompt to show the scale of AI’s environmental needs.

A single 100-word email generated by an AI chatbot using GPT-4 requires 519 milliliters of water, a little more than 1 bottle.

Police in the US shoot dogs so often that a Justice Department expert calls it an β€œepidemic” American law enforcement agencies employ dogs to do their detective work and dirty work. Yet dogs get killed by cops an awful lot.

Laurel Matthews, a program specialist with the US Department of Justice’s community-oriented policing services office, says fatal encounters are an β€œepidemic” and estimates that 25 to 30 pet dogs are killed daily by police.

Libraries have so much cool stuff people don’t know about! Some lend out tools and equipment! Subscriptions to periodicals! Seeds! (You don’t need to bring those back.) Help with taxes! English and reading classes! Canopy for cool documentaries and other movies! State parks passes!

Scrivener replied to my email about AI.

It's an unequivocal no to AI in their product.

(Their point being: they won't, if an author wants to they can.)

Please repost this. These guys are decent people and a pretty small company.

Q: What specific legislation will you commit to to make child care affordable?
Trump: Well, I would do that and we're sitting down, you know, I was, somebody, we had Marco Rubio and my daughter, Ivanka… But I think when you talk about the kind of numbers that I'm talking about that because the child care is, child care couldn't, you know, there's something you have to have it in this country, you have to have it... I want to stay with child care… So we'll take care of it. Thank you

A reminder if you use libraries (bc sometimes ppl are apologetic to authors about it) - don't be! We get paid! I get almost as much per borrow as I do per sale! And I LOVE libraries, they were a lifeline when the kids were little in particular.

In a first, Phoenix hits 100 straight days of 100-degree heat The relentless and record heat is testing the will of Phoenix residents.

Some of you may know this anecdote from the Bad Place, over ten years ago I asked one of my national security sources for my writing for an unexpected prediction. I was expecting EMP, etc. He said β€œIf you own anything in Phoenix, sell. It’ll be unlivable in a decade.”

NaNoWriMo’s endorsement of generative AI is like the New York Marathon suggesting that taking an Uber along the route also counts as running the marathon. You did, after all, tell the driver where you wanted to go! Btw this year we’re brought to you by Uber

It's amazing to me that "criticizing the use of AI" is supposedly classism, but "building a product on the stolen work of people with a median annual income of $25k and refusing to compensate them because you know they can't afford lawyers" isn't.

The last time Congress managed to pass a federal consumer privacy law was in 1988: The Video Privacy Protection Act. That’s a law that bans video-store clerks from telling newspapers what VHS cassettes you take home. In other words, it regulates three things that have effectively ceased to exist.

75 artists received $9,000 each in a basic income trial. The cash helped a yarn guru to buy a house and a new car. Fiber artist Tori Hanna used the $500 a month to replace her damaged car, cover debts and bills, and save for the down payment for her new home.

Okay well so what if guaranteed basic income helps low income families single moms teenagers kids babies homeless people and artists, surely there's SOMEONE who will be harmed by giving them free money!!! Surely!!!!

It was a private equity firm using inflation as an excuse to price gouge customers.

I love this question. Retired therapist here :raises hand:

For the most part, women get the opposite of a midlife crisis. Somewhere between the ages of about 40-50 we stop asking anyone’s permission and start self actualizing.

It’s not like life becomes perfect, but it’s *nothing* to fear

Oh I LOVE sharing this one with new people!

Did y’all know that, as a sweeping generalization, women don’t tend to get the midlife crisis?

We actually get a midlife reprieve.

"Can my husband find out who I am voting for?": The big question touching a nerve this election November may come down to a battle between controlling men and women who just want their freedom

"Can my husband find out who I am voting for?"

The question went viral. (The answer is no.) We don't know how much men control women's votes.

But the idea of it resonates this election, which is about weird men who are obsessed with controlling women.
