I've found Wound levels in SW and similar systems have SUCH an effect, the combats feel very gritty and a little short for fun. Those systems have their own coping mechanisms, like ways to prevent wounds that then make it seem like you're negating a successful roll, which some of my players *hate*.

Yes, they're different effects, the Wounds are actually one level further down. But the damage thresholds big number=>small number translation is there. The effect is both player ease and as Rob notes in the thread, some interesting game options. I prefer wounds but they have their own drawbacks.

Based on my (limited) experience, Grimwild takes more slkill to run and play than it presents at first, and Daggerheart seems/advertises as narrative first but is actually crunchy and wearing a velvet shirt.

Yeah, the number of games who use that now are probably way in the majority by now, the one-shot thing hasn't been a design "problem" per se in a while. I really loved Grimwild, but there's a bit more GM fiat, winging it vibe in there than first presents.

Having run a version in Savage Worlds for 20 years — they have three Wounds, and Wound thresholds are escalating for multiple hits — I’ll say that FWIW everyone I’ve taught or played with quickly flips to “Oh it’s a ladder’, where there ‘s NO translation, just “number bigger than or less than?”

Oh no, those are Wound thresholds, clear as day.

I say this with a ton of love for SW, GM’s have been trying to explain and players working around that little jankiness in SW wounds left over from its miniature war gaming days for two decades, and DH just said “how about just … simpler?” And you lose nothing.
