It was great to hold a talk yesterday for students from the Georgian American University about EU politics and foreign policy. Fascinating questions about the impact of the new US administration on the EU, and what cuts to USAID, NED, and RFE/RL mean for neighbourhood policy. ๐ฌ๐ช

As always - the countries closest to Russia are the canary in the coal mine for security.
If they feel the need to use land mines for their security then we should take note:
Lithuania, Poland, Latvia and Estonia have announced their withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention on Anti-Personnel Mines.

You canโt even really make a budget case for cutting RFE/RL. Total budget was $125mn - in the grander context of the US Federal Budget thatโs barely a drop in the ocean for what delivered huge pay outs in American soft power globally.

I struggle to see how anyone can defend this. RFE/RL was key to ending the Cold War - and today continues to be a beacon of hope for those in authoritarian regimes. The creation of โะะฐััะพััะตะต ะัะตะผัโ in 2017 in particular marked a shift in ending Kremlin monopoly on RU media.

Today marks 75 years of Chinese occupation of East Turkistan. In the last few years, millions of Uyghurs have been interred by the Chinese Communist Party in concentration camps:

Whilst its great that the EU has introduced the 15th round of sanctions against Russia - the sad reality is that thanks to this slow and incremental approach to sanctioning Russia will be ready for them. We should have been much more drastic and disruptive from the start.

My take on the risk of fragmenting social media too much - during a debate about why people are leaving Twitter/X for Bluesky:

Nudge policy idea: Charge passengers for hand luggage that goes in the overhead (not bags that fit under the seat) and make check luggage free. It would reduce queues at security and delays in boarding.

To put it another way - China, Iran, and North Korea have been better allies to Russia in terms of delivering both defensive and offensive equipment, than the West has been an ally to Ukraine.

Its easy to trivialise the ground taken by Russia in the last year - however they still occupy a territory the same size as all three Baltic States put together.
The West might be giving tools for defence but still hasn't given Ukraine the right tools to attack and retake lost territory.

The Police in Georgia are once again showing that they arenโt public defenders - but the paid thugs of a pro-Russian mafia state. Many of the protesters arrested last night were beaten whilst in custody. #GeorgiaProtest

I've spent years reading opinion pieces in top papers, listening to interviews on prime networks and being exposed to very serious pontificating by people who know shit about Russia, Ukraine, Israel or Palestine. Thus, I am fully available to comment, write or speak on Syria, on which I know nothing

What the Georgian Dream government has done today is on the same level as when Yanukovych turned his back on the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement. Expect protests to get much larger.

For more than thirty years now it has been the ambition of the Georgian people to rejoin the West and be a part of the Euro-Atlantic space. The pro-Russian Georgian Dream government is denying the people a chance to fulfil that aim.

Angela Merkel rejects criticism over Russia gas deals
The former German chancellor, who quit politics three years ago, speaks to the BBC in a rare interview.
Angela Merkel is shameless. No leader in the last thirty years has caused as much damage to Europe and the World as her. She appeased Russia, sold out Ukraine, destroyed the German energy market harming German industry, and let in millions of migrants with no controls.

Always had a problem with the 'escalation' argument. #Russia repeatedly escalates their war against #Ukraine. It was an escalation when Russia started using Iranian weapons. It was an escalation when they used foreign mercenaries. It was an escalation the moment they started to target civilians.
