Yep, terrible all round. That said, I'd argue that the one thing this has going for it is that it features the correct lineup on the sleeve, rather than a lineup that never existed except in the febrile imagination of the cover artist, as per the example I posted.

I'm lucky enough to be reading the new, soon-to-be-published English language version of Aymeric Leroy's definitive survey of the Canterbury Scene, Legends In Their Own Lunchtime. It's the book Canterbury fans like me have been waiting for.

We loved Zu Asche, Zu Staub, and both burst into it at unexpected moments. We're pretty late to it, having only discovered it last winter, but we are pretty obsessed with it.

Well, we paid to download it and continue enjoying it. I think we spend a lot of time swooning over the costumes and the set decoration.

I recall my sisters and me picking up big lumps of coal to take home from the Shilbottle colliery line in Northumberland. Also standing on Blackey Bridge, looking down on the mainline and getting covered in steam and soot.

We are currently watching S4 of Babylon Berlin, and this beautiful song was in last night's episode. It sounds like something I'd encounter on an album by Slapp Happy or John Greaves. Lovely unexpected chord changes under this charming lilting melody.

I saw this painting along with two others at an exhibition in Newcastle about 20 years ago. I experienced something that is very hard to verbalise but I found myself profoundly moved and disoriented at the same time. I can’t really say more without sounding a bit mad. A unique experience.

Kenyatta is in good company here. Braceful was still stationed in Germany as a member of the 82nd Army Band when he began playing in Dauner’s trio in November 1963. While Braceful would appear appear on later ECM albums, this is Dauner’s second and last session for the label.

Arild Andersen’s work with Braceful is exemplary. The title track has a wonderful psych-vibe to it as Kenyatta’s echo-laden flute dances with Dauner’s processed clavinet but things really take off when Andersen’s mighty groove gets underway.

Kenyatta’s next album, Gypsy Man on Atlantic, released in 1972, goes in a very different direction with smooth strings, funky beats, chunky bass grooves, wah-wah guitar, airy synths, all wrapped up in a period jazz-funk production that gets collectors hot under the collar. While placing Kenyatta in a very different context from Girl From Martinique, his playing still hits home.
