Run Lola Run (1998)

A German film showing they can do action as well as art. Lola Franke Polente) must retrieve stolen money within 20 minutes to deliver her boyfriend from certain death.

2/ A box office failure despite the above. It can appear cheesy but I found it affective. Enhanced by Beethoven’s 7th symphony’s slow movement such that I asked for it to be played as background to our signing the register at our wedding.

Zardoz (1974)

A “savage” man invades the community of now immortals in the 23rd century. Has he been sent? Is this destiny? Sean Connery, Charlotte Rampling and written/directed by John Boorman.

They backed Truss as well. It seems incompetence is their thing.

'What do experts know’ was his mantra.

My answer to him would be “So What”. I don’t believe there is tea set floating around the opposite side of the Sun. His statement is meaningless as it has the word “believe”.

2/ Michael Keaton voices the role of Porco. The background is the age before WW11 with the rise of fascism and the threat of war. A world weary cynical cursed hero who is still capable of love. Classic storytelling.

Porco Rosso (1992)

He did his best is true. That really says it. He just isn’t good enough.

Most parents teach their children to be respectful regardless of the provocation. And here the provocation was minimal. Any real man would have apologised for the outburst.

To pay for a sex change op. Important back story.

2/ Something fishy behind the wealth of Count Lazare de Cagliostro and the secret lies hidden in his castle. Our hero thief is determined to find out. Sounds fun doesn’t it…. and it is.

Lupin 111: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)

Arsene Lupin, gentleman thief devised by Maurice Leblanc in 1905. Many films and now a fictional series on Netflix. This rendition is from Studio Ghibli by legendary Miyazaki.

2/ You can see parallels with Indiana Jones (1981) and The Mummy (1999) and given the books first appeared in 1976 you sense their origin.

The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec (2010) France

Hugely popular comic book character in France comes to the screen courtesy of Lucy Besson. All star cast and big production featuring among it all a revived mummy, and pterodactyl.

He had to shoot the live octopus eating several times. A real challenge for a committed Buddhist.

Probably isn't a list per se. But there is probably many names in the files which could be made into a list. Perhaps that is how to read his response.

2/ This silent gem is justly famous for the ability to of Veidt to express despite wearing a fixed grin. It is this face that inspired Bob Kane’s Joker. Like English actors in the US, he is destined to play villains when leaving Nazi Germany to come to the UK.

The Man who Laughs (1928) Germany

Conrad Veidt is an orphaned 7th century nobleman disfigured by “Joker’ like grin. He ends up in a circus show There he rescues a blind girl, Dea. Ugliness is only skin deep.

More interested in Jean Luc Ponty and Larry Coryell on together. Wow

Looks like Benny Hill, are they related?

As long as you and yours aren’t at risk.

2/ What ensues is a true cult movie. Terrifically funny dialogue and circumstance tinged with tragedy. Richard E Grant excels especially when he delivers a famous Shakespearean speech in the pouring rain.

Withnail and I (1987)

Two heavy drinking drug using actors spend a weekend away from their damp cold bedsit in London bound for an idyllic retreat to an uncle’s country cottage. It’s a disaster and then the uncle turns up.
