NS government hired a US company (Huron) to help do a review of university programs. Cost 400K.

It did not bother to check whether Huron's methodology was compatible with local data collection practices (it wasn't).

Now Huron is trying to get unis to pay them to improve their data collection.

Dozens of CDC databases are not being updated β€” most related to vaccines, study finds The agency plays a key role in tracking the disease spread and vaccination rates. Last year, it seemed to back away from some of that work, according to new research.

Nearly half of the databases that the CDC used to update regularly β€” surveillance systems that tracked public health information like Covid vaccination rates and hospitalizations for respiratory syncytial virus β€” have been paused without explanation, according to new research.

Make your jokes about Faculty Senate meetings (we do!) but governance structures prevent costly fad-chasing! Small-d democratic procedures esp union workplace democracy *should* deflate overinvestment in the latest "innovation"

New book! So pleased to get my author copies of our edition, translation, and study of Gregorio Dati's "La Sfera", a fifteenth-century Florentine poem on cosmology and geography.
This was the brainchild of the unstoppable Carrie BeneΕ‘.
It's profusely illustrated and will be great for students.

4 questions, no follow-ups at PP's presser this morning in Sault Ste Marie.
They told me they choose a mix of local, national & French outlets.
CTV reporter Judy Trinh (who wasn't chosen) shouted a question about PP's refusal to get security clearance.
"Excuse me there's an activist here," PP said.

β€˜Climate of fear’: Montreal doctor says NYU cancelled her presentation A Montreal doctor says her presentation at NYU was abruptly cancelled and believes the university did so out of fear of being pressured by the Donald Trump administration.

NYU canceled a planned speech by the former president of Doctors Without Borders because she planned to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and cuts to US AID.

This is what actual campus censorship looks like.

we fixed acid rain! we fixed the ozone layer! we beat polio! we’ve rescued scores of species from the brink of extinction! the despair many of us feel about climate change isn’t that it’s too big to fix. it’s that we know it is fixable but we’re being thwarted by greedy ghouls at every turn.
