I first visited Montpelier in 2001 & applaud how they evolved to reveal the truth of the past. We are still struggling toward that β€œmore perfect union,” and may never get there. But the struggle must continue.

Agree-it depends on the book. I don’t do all those things to all books but I do all those things!

Always dog-ear my books. Underlining, marginalia, highlighting, post-it notes, notes in the end papers, writing my name on the title page. Have I missed anything?

Seeing a lot of β€œthis totally misunderstands what historians do.” If you’d like a research-backed strategy for better communicating to people what historians *actually* do, check out the β€œReframing History” report/toolkit from @aaslh.org. aaslh.org/reframing-hi... 1/

DuckDuckGo has introduced a new feature allowing users to filter out AI-generated images from search results, addressing growing concerns over synthetic content overwhelming authentic visuals online.
The filter can be activated through a dropdown in the Images tab, search settings, or by using a dedicated AI-free domain: noai.duckduckgo.com. The system relies on curated blocklists, including uBlockOrigin’s Huge AI Blocklist, to detect and suppress AI-generated imagery.
While not perfect, it significantly reduces synthetic content visibility. This move sets DuckDuckGo apart from competitors like Google and Bing by giving users direct control over their exposure to AI-generated material.

Great thread. I manage my campus’s GenEd program & we hear these stories all the time. Undergrads absolutely appreciate GenEd classes. But they have difficulty appreciating the value of a whole program or of a liberal education bc society (including many faculty) tells them only the major matters.

If they read it, yes, works well! But it’s using class time and a common book that really sells it.

They get too bogged down in the volume so over time I’ve assigned essays similar to this one by Paul Edwards, How to Read a Book: pne.people.si.umich.edu/PDF/howtorea... and we practice with one book.

Indeed! President Duke argued for β€˜Madison College’ bc Jimmy favored publicly funded highered and included women in his vision. But the location certainly attracted students. Then and now!

Huzzah! One of my first jobs in high school was working as an usher at the Playhouse in Wilmington’s Hotel du Pont, where I got to watch the traveling cast of A Chorus Line every night for two weeks. My 17 year old self was mesmerized. Such joy! I sang tits & ass for days.πŸ˜†

The (Ed) Tech Industry has made citizens believe that the problem with education is reading, thinking, and writing when the problem with education is austerity.

Reading, thinking, and writing are not the problems to be solved. Austerity is.

Friendly reminder that Instructure, parent company of Canvas, is owned by KKR, a private equity firm that purchased it for $4.8 billion last November.

What Ken Burns Won’t Say About the American Revolution On the road with America’s foremost history documentarian in a fractured country.

I was at that OAH plenary years ago when Burns spoke about The Civil War & audience members ripped into him about the distortions. His answer? β€œI’m a filmmaker, not a historian.” No concern then or since. So each series uses the same formula.
