wrt to some of the replies to this post, part of why the media has β€œmoved on” is because it has become extraordinarily difficult to document ICE activity on the ground, outside of them arresting citizens.

An annoying observation, perhaps: I don’t like the sound of the whining drones in the Olympics coverage. It grates on me; once I hear it, I can’t unhear it

He embodies the MAGA spirit really well, too: privileged child of a car dealership baron who cosplays as a "white working class" character. No wonder JD Vance likes him

Here’s an email I got from Scott Horton when I contacted him last month to confirm that he runs this account. There’s something very wrong with this guy, and yet I see him posting misinformation and ripping off actual journalists in my feed every day, because Bluesky runs on this shit.

[I'm being a little unfair to Chernyshevsky. He does follow this passage with several pages of detailed explanation of the profit-sharing, capital reserves, bulk purchasing and communal living, etc. But none of these characters get any of their own development, really]

β€œThe most difficult thing of all was to develop the idea that the ordinary seamstresses should each receive the same share of the profits, although some managed to earn more wages than others, and that those who worked better than others were already being sufficiently compensated by receiving higher wages. This was the final change in the distribution of profits made in the middle of the third year, after the workers understood that receipt of profits is not a reward for the skill of individual workers, but rather the result of the general nature of the enterprise, its organization and its goal. This goal was the greatest possible equality in distribution of the fruits of labor for participants in the enterprise, regardless of their personal characteristics. Any profit sharing by workers depended precisely on the nature of the workshop. The nature of the workshop, its spirit, and its order consisted in the unanimity of all; to achieve this unanimity, each participant was equally important. The tacit consent of the most timid or the least talented was no less essential in the maintenance and development of the enterprise for the general good and success of the whole than the active zeal of the liveliest or most talented.”

[Here’s Chernyshevsky’s explanation. I’m down, sounds great! I just feel like the β€œcoming to understand the organization’s goals” part gets yadda yadda’d]

[... but only because Chernyshevsky doesn't explain *how* or *why* the seamstresses came to this conclusion. It's all unearned buy-in. So, imho, more a fault of the narrative than of the underlying politics]

[To wit]

"It was the other girls, those with extra duties, who felt the awkwardness of receiving more and who refused it, once they came to appreciate the idea of the new system."

[I can see why Dostoevsky might call that "naive politics ...]

[Vera Pavlovna organizes a seamstress cooperative and distributes the profits equitably, changing the distribution according to the seamstresses' wishes. This, I imagine, is where some of Dostoevsky's exasperation with "What is to Be Done?" must have come from, classic "muh human nature" BS]

Just thinking about how Kid Rock in the opening scene of HBO’s Silicon Valley was super prescient about the aesthetics of what I call the nativist-tech coalition. Or maybe it was just accurately depicting a world that was slightly more insular then, and now runs our government and mass media
