What is it about Minnesota that made it a target for Trump’s ICE crackdown? The Democratic-leaning midwestern state where federal agents killed two citizens is in many ways anathema to the administration

Since the ICE surge started, I’ve asked nearly everyone why they thought Minnesota was the target, beyond immigration or fraud claims. Basically, the state is anathema to the Trump administration - strong social safety net, open to immigrants, collective culture. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

YouTube video by MS NOW Hayes: Trump bet Americans were as bigoted as Stephen Millerβ€”he was wrong

WATCH: β€œThis administration made a betβ€”and they keep making itβ€”that most Americans, the majority of us, are as bigoted as Stephen Miller. And they’re wrong,” says Chris Hayes as the Trump administration says it’s ending its ICE surge in Minneapolis.

I’m relieved that this violent paramilitary force will be removed from our streets, but I won’t believe it until they're actually gone.

Minnesotans deserve justice and accountability, and I won’t stop until we get it.

My household is supporting a South Minneapolis family unable to work or leave home due to ICE. If we can raise some or all of their $1600 rent, we can avoid drawing from high-demand assistance funds and ensure there's more to go around.

Living in Minnesota right now feels like being in the emergency room. Literally everyone is suffering in different ways, even if it's "just" a badly twisted ankle rather than a kidney stone or a full-on heart attack. The staff are working as hard as they can but energy and resources are dwindling.

Notes on winter When the world turns whimsical

Wild fact from @billmckibben.bsky.social's latest newsletter:

"The last colder-than-average month on planet earth was in February of 1985, which means that no one under the age of forty has ever known one."

Mother's immigration arrest leaves Madison soccer standout reeling Federal immigration agents detained a Madison soccer player's mother while she was in Minnesota for her son's games. Now, he's struggling.

Martin, an 18-year-old citizen and soccer player, traveled with his Madison-area team to Minneapolis for a Futsal tournament (which my kid's team was going to play in, then opted out). While there, ICE stopped Martin and took his mom, who has been detained since.

Kiddies who made it out of the ICE dungeon report sighting a schoolmate. Before this, the school district had no information on their whereabouts. The family has now been connected with a lawyer.

Youngsters who escape a govt dungeon are the only way to track abducted children? This is fine!

I knew Trump would target Minnesota. I didn’t expect this level of violence | Rachel Leingang I’m reporting on a political retribution campaign, disguised as immigration enforcement, in the community where I live

I've been covering Trump's retribution campaign since he came back to the White House. Then, that storyline came directly to my state - and what I've covered will stick in my brain forever. The children, the brutality, the isolation, the camaraderie and bravery. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
