The beginning of the release of Israeli hostages is a first moment of relief and humanity. Now every term of the agreement must be honored, fully, immediately, and by all sides. True security and dignity can only come through a negotiated two-state solution.

The EU must ensure accountability and act for real peace. Member states should recognise the State of Palestine. Only two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security can end this cycle of injustice.

The ceasefire must be immediate and made permanent. Every hostage must be freed. Humanitarian aid must enter Gaza now. The agreement and international law must be upheld, and those who violate them must face consequences.

We welcome the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. It is a crucial step, but not the end. Caution is needed. The violence must not resume, and the world must stay alert.

The EU is talking about a “drone wall” now. Good, but it’s not enough. We need a real European defence union with counter-drone capabilities built in: to intercept and neutralise.

Our citizens deserve credible protection, not patchwork defences.

We must ensure that humanitarian aid reaches every person, that all parties involved respect international law & that we begin the path toward a two-state solution by recognizing the State of Palestine-once all hostages have been released & with the condition that Hamas play no role in Gaza’s future

Yet, as Parliament underlined in its resolution last week, much more will be needed. Economic sanctions alone are not enough.

I can only welcome the Commission’s proposal and urge all EU Member States to support it by immediately reintroducing tariffs on Israeli goods and by approving the proposed sanctions against terrorist organisation Hamas, and against Israeli ministers and settlers.

De motie van wantrouwen tegen Ursula von der Leyen is verworpen. Nu terug aan het werk. Waar het echt over moet gaan: minder regulitis, meer koopkracht en bouwen aan een sterke Europese defensie om onze welvaart te beschermen. 🇪🇺

De ware bedoeling achter deze motie is het ondermijnen van Europa. Daarom zal ik donderdag tegen deze motie stemmen.

Toen we midden in een scherpe vaccinrace zaten met het VK, de VS en Israël, heeft de Commissie snel geschakeld en gezorgd voor vaccins voor alle Europeanen. Dat was een krachttoer.

De motie van wantrouwen tegen de Commissie-von der Leyen is slechte symboolpolitiek.

Extreemrechts heeft er altijd moeite mee wanneer Europa levert voor haar burgers.

De vrijheid om jezelf te zijn, om lief te hebben wie je wil, om vreedzaam samen te komen: dát is Europa! En waar die vrijheden in gevaar zijn, daar moeten wij liberalen zijn. Ook als dat gepaard gaat met tal van veiligheidsmaatregelen.

Wie toetreedt tot de Unie, doet dat ook voor onze waarden en normen. Onze rechtstaat is geen menukaart.

Daarom reizen we met 70 collega’s van het Europees Parlement naar Hongarije. Omdat we niet buigen voor wie de waarden van onze Unie uitholt, zeker niet voor een lidstaat die dat probeert.

Orbán zorgde ervoor dat de pride ongrondwettelijk werd in Hongarije. Maar de oppositie vond een legale manier om een alternatieve pride toch te laten doorgaan, om zowel de viering als de strijd voor LGBTQ-rechten voort te zetten.

Ik ben aangekomen in Boedapest 🇭🇺, waar ik morgen zal deelnemen aan de LGBTQ-pride die Orbán met man en macht probeert te verbieden.

Orbán trekt grenzen rond wie vrij mag zijn. Wij trekken die niet. ❤️💛💚💙💜

Erg bezorgd over het lot van Ahmadreza Djalali.

Vorige week sprak het Europees Parlement zich duidelijk uit: Djalali kreeg in Iran geen eerlijk proces, en zijn mensenrechten worden ernstig geschonden.

Wij eisen zijn onmiddellijke en onvoorwaardelijke vrijlating. #FreeDjalali

Djalali must return to his wife and children before it’s too late. #FreeDjalali

Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali has been unjustly imprisoned in Iran for over nine years. He is the longest-held EU citizen in the country.

Wie denkt dat 5% van het BBP dé oplossing is, verwart cijfers met strategie. Percentages beschermen geen burgers. Zonder visie, uitleg en samenwerking, zal deze discussie verzanden bij totaal gebrek aan draagvlak bij de burgers.

Alleen zo bouwen we, van onderuit, aan een volwaardig Europees leger: een leger dat vertrekt vanuit samenwerking, niet vanuit een blinde uitgavennorm zonder strategisch plan.

Wat we nodig hebben, is geen wapenwedloop tussen Europese landen, maar een Europese pijler binnen de NAVO. Die moet strategisch denken, maar ook gezamenlijk investeren. Een gedeeld Europees defensiebudget waarmee we samen militaire capaciteit opbouwen, systemen aankopen en technologie ontwikkelen.
