On dualist views where the soul is distinct from the body, only the material body dies. Dualist dead still exist as immaterial souls, and at least one soul allegedly reanimated his own dead material body. Self resurrection is more difficult for the materialist monist to explain, thus "near death."

Doesn't self-resurrection involve a contradiction? The very act of raising yourself shows you weren't really dead to begin with. Dead people don't perform actions.
