Spending time chasing my access to work caseworker via video calls when I should be focusing on getting ready for starting my new teaching job next week. This is the reality of being a deaf teacher.

Feeling anxious about my new job as I haven’t been able to recruit a #BSL Interpreter for Wednesday, Thursday or event anyone for first week of my new job. It’s not easy being a Deaf NQT

Today’s my hometown’s Gala. Two of my new pupils are part of the retinue this year and I just saw them go past in their carriage. One of them saw me and tapped the other and said “look, it’s Miss Stewart!”, whilst waving frantically at me. My heart melted at that point. 🥹😍

Met my new class today. Honestly, I cannot wait to start teaching them after the summer. P4 will be the best class at my school by this time next year!

As my final placement ends today I’ve been reflecting on my time on the PGDE course & about what it means to be a Deaf BSL user teacher in mainstream schools.

It's Deaf Awareness Week so we've picked a few of our fave books featuring characters using hearing aids and sign.

Reflecting our world means young readers can see themselves and each other equally represented and celebrated in the books they read. Books with us all in.

It went well, considering there were some tech glitches. It's not an easy task to make sure it’s relevant to all children who have varying needs, different languages and learning levels! I hope they enjoyed it too!
