A quick note to all the NewSkys: there really isnβt algorithm here. We depend on each other to spread the word. So if you want others to see something, repost it. Liking something adds it to your feed but doesnβt surface it for others.

Ok, I started a starter pack for novel scholars and the people who love them. Long live long forms! Happy to add anyone I missed.

@profmarylewis.bsky.social I can also attest now that Novavax really is less reactogenic. I have gotten knocked out with every single mRNA vaccine but I woke up today with no fever, no chills!

I just got mine from Costco today! And it was very easy to schedule. You don't need to be a member. I think if you're 2 months out from an infection you should be good to get vaccinated.

Yes, it isn't as reactogenic as the mRNA vaccines & the immunity it builds is much more durable, lasting around 8 months vs. 3 months for mRNA. It's also able to keep up better w/ variant evolution than the mRNA vaccines. It will probably take some time for MA pharmacies to stock it but I'm waiting!

Finally! Excited that Novavax will be available now to people who have gotten mRNA vaccines.

Publishers and Scholars, Unite!
Universities have disinvested from their presses just as much as their humanities departments and libraries. Will working together stop it?
Excitedβ& a bit nervousβto have this essay in the world. It started as an MLA talkβwhich I described at the time as the political unconscious of the usual How To Publish Your Book fareβ& became much more thanks to the wonderful team at Public Books. Solidarity!

Opinion | Gutting Language Departments Would Be a Disaster
Once a program is gone, it is very difficult and expensive to bring it back.
Stunning, vital essay in The Chronicle of Higher Ed by Rebecca Walkowitz. www.chronicle.com/article/gutt...
"As with other important disciplines, the study of languages is a long game.... It takes decades of basic research to create the groundwork for major innovations."

Mostly because students don't even know this is a problem!

My classrooms too, but those STEM students don't major, which means that we don't get any credit for teaching them. If the only numbers that mattered were butts in seats, we'd be fine. I don't see students militating for changing this kind of administrative bean-counting model any time soon...

I'm sure this is true for many students, but I don't think we can discount the power of peer pressure on students' decisions about majors. @hannahfrydman.bsky.social, who's at a big state school, has told me about how students will say things like, "but all my friends are majoring in STEM!"
