The work of Gertrude Eileen Trevelyan was out of print and utterly forgotten for over 80 years. But now, thanks to the Recovered Books series from @bhousepress.bsky.social, four of her best novels are back in print.

All four are available in the US from @asterismbooks.bsky.social.

2024 was a sensational year for new releases. You would not know this if you only looked at the Oscar nominations.

Here's RUTH, ROSES AND REVOLVER (1987), a documentary from BBC's Arena series with David Lynch presenting clips from early surrealist films that he considered most significant to his own work. Big improvement over Dailymotion's copy. Only aired once! gofile.io/d/CWDkwh

2024 was the year of #WaferThinBooks. 366 daily posts with suggestions of (mostly) under-150 page long books to accompany our WaferThinBooks.com reading group.

I'll continue to post occasional recommendations, but the daily posts are at an end. I hope you found a few books worth reading.

A small selection of Christmas movies is now available on rarefilmm, didn't have much time to work on these so nothing too rare but I still wanted to upload some. Next year, if all goes well, should be a much better and varied selection. Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas :)

Lindsay Anderson once said, β€œβ€¦ when two or three who love the cinema are gathered together, the name of Mary Astor always comes up.” What few of her film fans know, however, is that after she said goodbye to her acting career, she went on to write six striking novels.

Some (not 20) books that influenced me, with explanations.
5. Dorothy Richardson's Pilgrimage
For a man, Pilgrimage, its 13 volumes amounting to over 2,000 pages, involves weeks/months of seeing the world through the eyes of a woman who refuses any subservience to men. It's extremely mind-opening.

I watched this last night. For research (seriously). Heartbreaking to learn that the amazing Kay Kendall died less than two years later from leukemia. And sad to learn that her husband, Rex Harrison, and her doctor kept the fact of her disease from her. Was that kind or cruel?

Dark Octave

                                for Edmond Jabès

To see darkness
the eye withdraws from light
in light
the darkness is invisible
the eye's weakness
is no weakness of the light
but the eye
away from light
is eyeless
its power is not-seeing
and this not-seeing
sees the night
do not dismiss your darkness
or you’ll be left
with vision's
lesser angles
it
fills the eye entirely

This bit that Jacques Tourneur lays on us at the start of I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, about the overshadowing savagery of existence and how things aren’t really as they seem, is really bumming me out.

BLACK BEAUTY (1933), starring Alexander Kirkland and Esther Ralston, has finally been digitizedβ€” hidden in a "15 Family Movie Collection" DVD (apparently, a VHS has been floating around, too). Hopefully, more people will see this piece of cinema history.
