My son is trying to set up a bookclub at his primary school in the north east. It serves a very deprived catchment area so this would be such a great investment.

Finished The Marriage Portrait last night and it was ok. A bit long and the ending was predictable. Anyway the dice have decreed that my next read is A Passage to India so Iโ€™m off to bed in 5. Just got to finish this chapter on โ€˜Lunchโ€™ from A Bright Cold Day by Nathan Waddell.

A black-and-white portrait photograph of Zora Neale Hurston, taken around the 1930sโ€“1940s. She is shown from the neck up, wearing a dark wide-brimmed hat tilted slightly to one side and a textured, patterned blouse. Her short, curly hair frames her face, and she looks directly past the camera with a warm, confident smile that reveals her teeth, conveying poise and charisma.

The cover of the novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston. Against a textured blue background, a striking artistic silhouette of a Black woman's profile faces right, her face and neck in black-and-white photography overlaid with vibrant, multicolored abstract patterns in red, yellow, gold, and blue. A large golden halo-like circle glows behind her head. Bold white handwritten-style text at the top reads "ZORA NEALE HURSTON," while the title "THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD" spans the bottom in large capital letters, with "A NOVEL" in smaller text to the right. Faint overlaid text fragments from the book appear in the background.

I have many unread or unfinished books so in 2026 the dice decide whatโ€™s next. I have 5 shelves with 10 books on each. My D10 chose The Marriage Portrait! Caveat: 3 chapter rule-hate it and it goes to charity.

Out of the 6 of her books that I read back-to-back, last summer, this was the passage that really struck me.
All too relevant, even a few months ago.

Split-image portrait of Baroness Emmuska Orczy: on the left, a black-and-white studio photograph of the author in early 20th-century attire, wearing a light chiffon gown with lace bodice, double strand of pearls, pearl drop earrings, and an elegant updo; on the right, the iconic red cover of her novel "The Scarlet Pimpernel" featuring a black line drawing of the masked hero aiding aristocrats into a carriage, with bold title text above and "BARONESS ORCZY" below.

First bookclub of the year last night discussing โ€˜All Foursโ€™. We are a new group of 6 women aged 19-50 and 3.5 of us had read the book! A provocative read which resonated in many ways but we disliked how much the protagonist was trying to find who she was by emulating stereotypical male behaviour.

And what does it mean to be a woman without a male counterpart? The use of the word โ€˜knownโ€™ is doing a lot of work. Have you read All Fours?
