I really enjoyed it when I first watched through it (nights of Parks, 30 Rock, Community, and The Office were absolute peak), but watching again post-Obama I did feel like many of its platitudes had worn thin. The right people with the right attitude isn’t sufficient, nor is a material solution.

This is pretty clearly echoing the Clintonian strategy of 90s “third way” liberalism, that the right people with the right programs can use the state to solve the contradictions created by capitalism. This is a neoliberal sentiment (whether one agrees with it or not).

Theres an episode where she has to choose between closing an animal shelter or her friend losing her government job but instead finds a 3rd way

What I think the danger is about Will and other chart enthusiast’s thinking is that they think we can redirect that behavior into something more positive by simply fixing the culture, but that would be getting mad at a mirror.

When people say “material conditions are what inform people’s behavior” they don’t mean “people respond logically” but instead “material conditions are the base driver of behavior and culture will be manifested to justify that behavior.”

I may be misunderstanding, but I would argue religious belief isn’t an indicator that people don’t react to their material conditions, but that they don’t understand the source/reasons behind them; the impoverished Christian who tithes at an opulent church, for example.
