I need to watch the whole thing again with this interpretation in mind, especially as regards the child aspect. I mean, he actively encourages the violation of social norms. 🤷‍♀️ It's worth investigating, in any case.

The bishi is, as I noted in my previous rambling, a combination of the bear aspect and the child aspect: not as serious as the child, not as unhinged as the bear. So he fits into the role of the ego, which mediates between the id and superego.

*None* of Irabu's aspects seem to give a flip about social norms or ideals, but I think the superego may be represented by a child because this part of the psyche is formed in childhood and so in a sense is always a child. I guess he directs how the patients relate to social norms? Dunno.

The bear aspect strongly exhibits the qualities of id, driven entirely by pleasure and desire, especially sexually (Mayumi, ahem). He has zero restraint. The child is a little less convincing (to me) as the superego, which governs things like social norms and ideals.

I don't really hold with Freudian psychology, but I can see how it fits into the Daoist concept of yin-yang (which is what I assumed Irabu's three facets to represent), so it's not surprising to find it in a show about psychology from a culture steeped in Daoism.

I read somewhere that the psychology used in Kuuchuu Buranko is Freudian, so I did a quick brush-up on the id-ego-superego thing and it's a very convincing interpretation. Irabu's three aspects can be seen as representing the id, ego, and superego. #kuuchuuburanko
