Nearly 3K people age out of foster care in California each year. Since 2020, HCD’s TAY programs have helped almost 16K young adults exit or prevent homelessness in California, giving them the tools to attain and maintain housing stability to focus on work and education.

This round of TAY awards went to 54 California counties to fund housing resources for youth ages 18-24, provide wrap-around supportive services, train child welfare workers in housing navigation, and supplement rents for youth in the most expensive rental markets.

On Friday, Los Banos broke ground on One Tree Village, a 58-unit permanent supportive housing community. This project is a major step forward in providing stable housing and essential services for residents experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

The Phoenix in @cityofoakland.bsky.social is a new supportive housing development from @ebaldc.bsky.social providing affordable housing for low-income households, particularly those experiencing homelessness. The building will also include community spaces & offices for resident services.

Zephyr & Crescent by @losangelescounty.bsky.social and Linc Housing are now open in Long Beach. These two communities offer 177 units for people who’ve experienced homelessness. With wrap-around services, these developments are helping to reduce homelessness and build lasting stability.

Larry spent years surviving homelessness on the streets of San Francisco. Larry now lives at 180 Jones, a new affordable housing community in San Francisco. 180 Jones was supported by more than $39M from HCD’s Multifamily Housing Program & Housing Accelerator Program.

Ground has broken on Goldfinch at Mulberry Gardens by Eden Housing, a 149-unit affordable housing development for low-income households in Riverside. Built alongside Sparrow, Goldfinch is the 2nd phase of an infill project on a former CalFire site.

Serenade on 43rd by Wakeland Housing is a 65-unit supportive housing community in San Diego’s City Heights neighborhood, serving individuals with extremely low to low incomes, including those experiencing chronic homelessness.

Across California, HCD is making an impact. Director Velasquez joined the Governor’s SAFE Task Force on homelessness as HCD marked 60 years. We celebrated new affordable homes—and the stories behind them, like Nakia and HCD team member Junius Barrie.

The new 90-unit community was made possible through $46M from HCD’s Housing Accelerator and $27M from the Affordable Housing Sustainable Communities Program jointly administered with CalSGC. These investments have unlocked new affordable housing supporting CA's climate goals.
