Interesting! As I recall the humanities fiercely resisted suggestions that REF move to bibliometric methods. But I note the paper only deals with journals, not books/book chapters, which is a potential distortion factor and I think a reason why bibliometric methods were resisted in the first place?

Depends what you want to use it for ... I took the plunge and created an academic blog ten years ago and have never regretted it. I use it as a scratchpad for thoughts/ideas, for extracts of talks that will never get published, etc. Cons include risks of plagiarism and self-plagiarism, I guess.

Change is often difficult but when a new interface constrains access compared to the version it replaces, it underlines the political nature of interface design in the ways that interactions with data are shaped and restricted.

absolute nightmare to adjust.

We Need an Interventionist Mindset | TechPolicy.Press
To stabilize and enhance democratic practices, danah boyd advocates for an interventionist approach to AI regulation.
Policymakers and technologists alike are stuck in a βsolutionismβ trapβbut particularly with AI, we need to focus on intervention, not βsolutions,β argues danah boyd. An interventionist framework ensures a more iterative and non-deterministic approach to shaping AI futures.

I recall a battle with a co-supervisor insistent on joint authorship of a PhD student's paper. Neither of us had written it and only I had commented on it. Student rightly got sole authorship, but the co-supervisor never spoke to them again ... In part down to disciplinary differences/expectations.

Archives are throttling access to data that was supposed to be open.
Openly licensed cultural heritage vs GenAI: institutions are increasingly spooked re the few bad actors scraping content, so shutting off access to everyone. This is a clash of values: we're going to see more and more memory institutions trying to roll back on access to out of copyright material π
