The studies on income disparity show that there is disparity between women and men in Canadian academic positions, for example. And remember when the Canada Research Chairs were almost all men - so much so that the feds had to mandate more women being appointed.

Definitely! But I spent 20 years in Sask and have seen a very gendered discourse about education and jobs there

Gender breakdown probably explains it. I'm extrapolating from research that shows once women's participation rate in a profession reaches a certain point, status of that profession goes down.

The biggest and quirkiest roadside attractions to see on your next Canadian road trip, according to readers From a dinosaur in the Prairies to the β€˜world’s largest axe’ in New Brunswick, you told us which monuments are worth more than a pit stop

Hahaha - I took one of the photos in this article while on a short trip in June. It did not disappoint. (gift link)

I'm rereading me some Sara Ahmed in preparation for teaching a doctoral seminar this year. She is always pertinent.

Ontario court strikes down Ford government's plan to remove Toronto bike lanes | CBC News An Ontario court has deemed the province's plan to remove three major Toronto bike lanes unconstitutional.

I'm not a cyclist. This is, however, very good news for every person who travels in Toronto by any mode other than car.

This is a much better article than the headline alone would suggest. It turns out the "why" and "when" cases are pretty limited.

Did a ms review recently where that was pretty clearly the author's take on it. I did not recommend publication.

There are reports of a number of conferences relocating to Canada already. The size of AAR-SBL is an issue, though.

I had a grad student ask me this week if this was an option. I said yes. The unit has invited them to submit the paper for publication in the volume anyway.

"#2" being "Fear of arbitrary ICE arrest."

I'm a grad-program director (among my many other roles). This is what keeps me up at night thinking about my grad students.

Let me put this another way:

Top reasons why Cdn-US tourism is down as seen by Canadians:

1. Forced annexation threats
2. Fear of arbitrary ICE arrest
3. General dismay @ new US
4. Tariffs, levied despite USCMA deal

Top reasons as seen by US media/govt:
1. Tariffs generally
2. 51 State 'jokes'

Led me to reflect on why not, and concluded that it's about how masculinity is constructed in AB/SK. It's about drilling into the earth and taking stuff out. Passively receiving solar energy would be too feminine. 2/

Not a historian, but Neo-Assyria, Neo-Babylon, Achaemenid Persia, Diadochoi all have always struck me as being really stupid. Ptolemies too. As a Canadian I'm hoping we ride it all out like, maybe Nabataeans?

It's July 4th. Americans have nothing to celebrate and everything to mourn, as their country has now fully transitioned from a weak democracy to a full authoritarian - indeed, fascist - regime. And too few even recognize it.
