This 1963 cover for Wuthering Heights, drawn by Paul Hogarth, is just fantastic. I never tire of looking at it. Catherine and Heathcliff together on a raw Pennine day. It's all there.

So here's my aged 17 drawing of a cat. Which, looking back, I'm rather pleased with.

‘At the Lübeck Orphanage’ was painted in 1894 by the early German impressionist Gotthardt Kuehl. The orphanage, in Kuehl’s hometown, was originally founded in the mid-16C to care for destitute children after a period of famine and epidemics

The saddest painting I've seen for a while. 10 children and only 2 are engaging, and that's over a game of chess. None has eye contact, most are looking down. None are talking. And no toys. Even the flowers fail to enliven this barren, shabby room.

I can remember, at the end of the 1976 summer, going outside in t-shirt and jeans just to stand in the rain and get soaked.

Sunrise, especially around 4am on June mornings, just before the world wakes up.

And 4pm on December afternoons, when the air turns chill and heavy, and a silence falls over everything.

Yes, but only in a jamjar when I was 12 or so.

Too late. I watched it in 1984 in Sheffield, and boy was it scary. I still have a clear recall of some of the nuclear aftermath scenes, all in locations I know well.

An unusual mix of upper and lower case letters I think. Not a good look.
