I think of it like dungeon-as-setting. Beyond just being a really big dungeon, a good megadungeon contains every element of a sandbox campaign. Factions, settlements, history, treasure, monsters, NPCs; all interconnected in a discrete space that’s mappable and explorable. Add a town and you’re done.

I finally got to level two and drank from a fountain. Which of course summoned a water demon. After losing most of my health in one hit, I chanced it and read an unidentified scroll. It summoned a newt which bit me to death.

Thanks to @seanmccoy.bsky.social for the original concept. I‘m opting for 12 dungeons instead of one huge mega-dungeon, in the hope I might actually use a couple of em with my group, but the spirit of the challenge remains I think.
