I heartily recommend Newcastle as well! [I'm no use for gathering footage (sorry!) as I am not resident now]

As AI enters the operating room, reports arise of botched surgeries and misidentified body parts Medical device makers have been rushing to add AI to their products. While proponents say the new technology will revolutionize medicine, regulators are receiving a rising number of claims of patient ...

When AI was added to a tool for sinus surgery: β€œCerebrospinal fluid leaked from one patient’s nose. In another… a surgeon mistakenly punctured the base of a patient’s skull. In two other cases, patients suffered strokes after a major artery was accidentally injured”

Why not spend $2.7b on solar & batteries instead? Govt to pay up to $180m/year or $2.7b over 15 years to lease LNG re-gasification plant, paid for by $15-$30 'levy' per household per year. That $2.7b would build four Benmore Dams worth of electricity

FYI I’ve opened this up for full public reading, listening & sharing after requests from paying subscribers. Their support allows me to do this kind of public interest journalism on Aotearoa’s political economy around housing, climate & poverty in public. #nzpol thekaka.substack.com/p/why-not-sp...

One of the easiest ways to shoot down the idea that "AI" is an expert is to show how it deals with something people know about.

Younger readers may not get this as most appliances come pre-wired, but anyone 35+ can see these are chaotic fire hazards.

From Mastodon, AI asked how to wire a plug:

Bikes are fine but what if you're a Hungarian police officer and you need to deploy your dog to stop a crime?

That said, their handling of the planned train stock failing to turn up was pretty bad. Cancelling all seat reservations, mayhem boarding? Pretty bad.

Reminder that "jaywalking" was literally made up by american car manufacturers to shift the blame for accidents from drivers to pedestrians. "Jay" was a slang term meaning "idiot" or "rube".

Are you stalking us? First MTL-QBC, now this?! πŸ˜… I did enjoy your Globe piece on Quebec City. We were slumming it in the HI Auberge (ice- inside-inside-the-windows hotel), followed by VIA to TOR (don't ask) and #1 on the 18th. What a great country you live in, hope your journey is not too frozen!

The UK government didn't want you to see this report on ecosystem collapse. I'm not surprised | George Monbiot It took an FOI request to bring this national security assessment to light. For β€˜doomsayers’ like us, it is the ultimate vindication, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Please spread this far and wide, as stories don't get much bigger than this. When the government blocks even the intelligence services from telling us we're heading for environmental catastrophe, you know we have a problem. A very big problem.
Thank you.

I’m a 24-year-old NZ graduate. Here’s why I’m moving to Australia I believed in the social contract: study, work hard, get ahead, build a life. Now I realise that deal no longer applies – at least not here.

Not the future we want for our kids. Travelled through Canada over the last two weeks, struck by the similar difference in ambition and opportunity compared to NZ thespinoff.co.nz/society/27-0...

Same bar, same bike hire, 10 years apart, opposite seasons (just a few degrees above 0⁰C today). The seawall bike ride is still amazing, especially when I don't have to tow a bike trailer for the kids! #Vancouver #bikes

Just realised how lucky we are to get away with sneaking our family in on a mix of NZ and UK passports ahead a month ago. What a farce, money grabbing policy all the way.

Would like to say I am enjoying VIA Rail but today not going well. Train failure, 1hr+ late depart. Seat reservations cancelled, family scattered around carriage after boarding mayhem. 2.5hrs late after sitting in forest enjoying a track fault. We're not in Japan (or AKL), Toto.
